Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Low weight?

My doctor has been requiring us to come in for a weight check every month because my dd is at the lower end of the curve. She's always gained weight and always grows in length. I'm starting to become frustrated and was wondering if anyone was going through a similar situation.

Re: Low weight?

  • Yes! I actually have another appointment for a weight check tomorrow. To be honest, I am thinking about seeing a new pedi. If he were in failure to thrive range (3% or less) I would understand, but he's between 10-15% and meeting all his milestones. And DH and I are both tall and thin, so this doesn't come as a huge shock. I don't have any advice for you, though. Just sorry you are experiencing the frustration as well!

  • DD was 7 lbs 10 oz and 20" at birth (around 50%) but was 14 lbs and 25" at her 6 month appointment (around 10%). My pedi has never been concerned. We are both short, so is DS. He said DD is petite but perfect. She eats well and is very strong. My friend's DD is small too. But her and her husband are small as well. I think she seems fine and she's the same height and less than a pound smaller than DS who is the same age. Her doctor has made her go to specialists and all sorts of stuff which seems crazy. I think some pedis are much more overly cautious than others.

  • DD has always been around 10th% for weight and height, our ped has never been concerned.  At her 15mo appointment she was 18lbs 4oz & 29.25"

  • E was around 8th % and now I think sits around 10th %.

We don't have to go for weight checks or anything. He just doesn't want to see weight loss, and he acknowledges that someone has to be in the 10th %.

  • Has your DD dropped percentiles in weight? I think that is more of the concern, than being in a low range and staying there. For example, DD was in the 85th percentile when she was born, and she was around the15th percentile for weight at her 6 month appointment. My doctor mentioned a slight concern at her 3rd month appointment and suggested we start solids at 4 months instead of waiting until 6 months. He also said that if we were concerned, we could come in earlier than her 6  month appointment, but we didn't. Her doctor still doesn't seem all that concerned about it even though she has been dropping down the scales. Is your DD breastfed? Another consideration is that they scales that they use are for both formula and breastfed babies. Formula fed babies tend to gain more and on average be a higher weight, so that scale is skewed. I think my DD will have dropped further down the scale at her 9 month appointment when we go... I will be curious to see what he says, but up until this point he is not concerned.

  • DD has always been on the low end, 2% at 6 month, 1% at 4 month, but her curve is going upward, so the pedi is not concerned.  He also said, like PP, that she is a breastfed baby and those charts don't accurately show growth.

DH and I were not big children, so we are not concerned.  She is meeting, and really exceeding all her milestones.  She's just petite.

If you are truely concerned, talk with the pedi on why they are doing weight checks.  We get copies of her growth curve as well, that maybe something you can ask for to give yourself some piece of mind.

  • Yes. We went in for our 4 month appt and he had only gained a half pound in 2 months. Do you BF? I did a weighed feeding and found that my supply was devastatingly low. He would get about an ounce from me and was in need of lots more than that. So I ended up going back in a month for a weight check, switching to formula, and he is gaining like a champ now.
