Nurseries and Baby Gear

maybe an impossible question? how much do I need?

mobile: maybe an impossible question? how much do I need?

I am a FTM and due end or July/beginning of August. My goal is to have everything done by the end of June. Nursery ready, hospital bag ready, everything purchased, clothes (up to 3 month size) washed, etc.

How many outfits/clothing/onesies does the baby need?

How many blankets does the baby need?

How many sheets?

How many pacifiers?

We are using disposable. How many diapers do we need? wipes?

What do I need that I am not thinking of?

I just have no idea what we will need and I am not sure when/how often I will be able to make it to the store. I am hoping I don't have a csection. Also, DH started a new job last month, so he will only have maybe a week (or two - I am hoping two) off to be with us.

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: maybe an impossible question? how much do I need?

  • How many outfits/clothing/onesies does the baby need? We found that we prefered bottoms that snap up the center and clothes that dont need to go over LOs head. We probably could get away with 6 outfits minimum but then you are doing laundry more often. Would probablt aim for 12 if getting them second hand. We keep two emergency outfits in the diaper bag along with extra blanket. We had footed jammies I thought would use ... didnt. Have barely used the onsies unless can snap or zip off LO to remove.

How many blankets does the baby need?
I am liking the Aiden and Anis blankets. Could get away with four of those if had to. We have 8. They are great for covering the carseat or stroller if around germy people. Also have some recieving blankets that LO quickly grew too big to be able to swaddle in and she is a small baby.

    How many sheets?
I think we have 3 sheets and two of the water proof crib liners.

    How many pacifiers?
Bought three ahead of time, however if BFing, they discouraged us from using them initially. At three weeks started using them however there are SO many different styles and sizes of the exterior plastic parts and the ones i first bought were way too big, yet the breathing holes on the hard plastic were the right size that LOs fingers looked like theyd get stuck. Would have a few and wait to get more if needed after you know if they are going to be used or might need a different style.

We are udisposable. How many diapers do we need?
Would get a smaller size pack or two to start with, however you dont know which type of disposable diaper will fit your LO best or could cause skin sensitivity. Plus you won't know size until after LO is born. If you have friends around and they come to visit, they are happy to do a quick stop at the store when needed. Just have some cash on hand to pay them back right away.

wipes? Same deal. Would get a pack or two of sensitive skin wipes, or else research the ideas of alternatives. Also get a pack to keep in the diaper bag.

What do I need that I am not thinking of? The beauty of modern day is that most things are at your finger tips since there is online ordering.

I had a couple of bottle for just in case there were BFing issues. Diaper ointment, gas drops, gripe water, nose frieda is popula -our pedi said to get something that mostly contains vasoline; baby saline solution, pack of disposable changing pads ... put one over the non disposable pad for when pee and poop occur mid change. Soft wash cloths, sun hat for a bit more shade when going outside on walks. Thermometer that you trust, vitamin D drops , nightlights or light that takes low wattage bulb, nail file instead of nail clippers, container for poopy laundry to soak in. Can get a dish pan from a Dollar store to serve this purpose.

If planning to nurse, would get a light weight robe because LOs head will stick to your bare arm. For me, this was a big deal. Found something at Target a few months back for approx 20. Far better price than was at Motherhood. Nipple cream, panty liners, extra pads for PP bleeding.

  • The clothes will depend on how often you do laundry. Cotton and muslin blankets? I think about a dozen (in both cars, the stroller, diaper bag, and for home). We had 3 sheets to start and now hav 6. Reflux  meant lots of middle of the nigh linen changes. Diapers.com ships overnight, so don't worry about stocking up.

  • First of all, will you be having a baby shower?  If YES, then forget about buying clothes and blankets, b/c you will receive A TON of those.  Yes, A TON.

If you are not having a shower at all,

Clothing - for newborns, all you need is onesies (esp you're having a summer baby).  I'd say 2-3 a day.  If you do laundry 2x/week, you'll need 8-10 onesies.  You don't really need "outfits" until the baby is older.

Blankets - 2-3 is enough, esp you are having a summer baby.

Sheets - we have 3; but 2 is probably enough.

pacifiers - NONE. The hospital sent us home with several.  We did use a paci for the first month or so (I EBF).  After that when we tried, we had little success.  We ended up buying a couple of different brands but DS never took one.

In terms of what other things you'll need - your best bet is to take a look at baby bargains book or other online lists.  Things I found crucial at the very beginning were:

    1) BF supplies (BF pillows, nipple cream, soothie gel pads)

    2) Swaddleme/sleepsack

    3) Rock N Play

    4) burp cloths, wash cloths

  • How many outfits/clothing/onesies does the baby need? LO was born in November so that's something to keep in mind.  We used a lot of the side snap tops just with a diaper.  After that, we used a lot of the Gerber sleep and plays.  We literally bought every single size in the same patterns right away.  She's over 6 months and still has the same patterns from when she was born (different size of course).

How many blankets does the baby need?  We mainly used 2 blankets for swaddling and then we had another to cover her car seat.  I think a lot of times receiving blankets are over rated and people go out and buy too many.

How many sheets?  We have two sets.

How many pacifiers?  We didn't buy any right away.  The hospital gave us one.  LO liked it so we bought a few more and then LO didn't want anything to do with a pacifier.

We are using disposable. How many diapers do we need? wipes?   LO was born over 8 lbs so we didn't use a lot of the newborn size.  I tend to buy diapers in bulk.  We use Huggies and have had problems.  A lot of times, Target has deals where you get free wipes when you buy diapers so that's when I tend to buy wipes.  Other than that, I just buy the bulk pack of generic wipes.

What do I need that I am not thinking of?  I think you've thought of most things.  Just remember that all the baby needs when it comes home is diapers, a food source, and a place to sleep.

  • We are using disposable. How many diapers do we need? wipes?

If you have a BJs or Costco near you they sell in bulk, this is where we buy our diapers and wipes, but make sure you know what brans/kind works for your LO before going all in.

How many blankets does the baby need?

Not many I have five, mostly to cover LOs carrier. The receiving blankets are quickly outgrown.  Mine did in about 2 weeks and she was small. Ended up making my own. If your crafty or someone you know is.

    How many sheets?

We have 4 that that works well.

    How many pacifiers?

We got one from the hospital, other than that we bought a two pack, and that has worked fine for DD.

What do I need that I am not thinking of?

Best ting we EVER got was the diaper genie! Love this thing. A few bottles or more depending on your choice of feeding options. some swaddlers (the velcro kind), a bouncer, Pack N Play/other safe co sleeper unless the crib fits in your room (ours did not).

    Best of luck!

  • check out lucieslist.com She has an awesome guide that gives you the minimums.  I find that it varies widely dependent upon how much laundry you want to do and how much baby spits up.  I couldn't help myself - I bought wayyyy too many clothes.

Diapers - don't buy too many up front.  You never know what will fit or work well for baby.  We were in premie diapers for over a month and others never use them at all.  I also have bought packages of diapers just to find out they give horrible rashes to dd or they are just not cut right for her needs (for example I found Huggies leaked horrible on DD but Pampers didn't).

  • How many outfits/clothing/onesies does the baby need?  Depends on how often you want to do laundry, but I would say 10 outfits/sleepers. Less if you do laundry often, more if your baby is a spitter.

How many blankets does the baby need? I prefer the sleep sacks for swaddling, but blankets work too (many baby blankets are too small for swaddling). I would say 3 of these. Take the one from the hospital too, it is the perfect size.

How many sheets? I have 3, only needed 2. If your baby spits up, you may need more.

How many pacifiers? Do a few from a few different brands. Don't stock up until you figure out which one your baby likes.

We are using disposable. How many diapers do we need? wipes? N/A, I use cloth. I would just start with the largest pack of newborn. Don't stock up since you don't know how big your baby will be.

  • How many outfits/clothing/onesies does the baby need?

truly, jus being onsies/diaper shirts if you live in a warm climate, and some sleepers.  This is what they wear 99.9% of the time.  fr the first 3 months they really only dress up for occasions- so depending on your life/ pictures etc.  I have four kids so these are my answers.  My dd was Born Aug 5th, 2012.

How many blankets does the baby need?  I used receiving blankets as burp clothes and swaddling cloths too.  I loved them .. I have 10 ish.

How many sheets? seriously 2-5 are enough one to wash, one to have, one to have on crib - so 3 min

How many pacifiers?  I would buy 1 of say 2-3 brands.  baby might take or might not- bring o hospital too as some hospitals don't provide.

We are using disposable. How many diapers do we need? wipes?   baby poos about 8-10X a day. so adjust accordingly!   wipes don't stock on diapers or wipes.  as baby can get allergies or be allergic/react!

What do I need that I am not thinking of? Pads!  always wings are the best!  adult depends work well too

    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Lots of good advice.  I'll throw in my two cents.

How many outfits/clothing/onesies does the baby need?

I'm going to depart from the consensus here.  I bought/received tons of clothes for DD1 and DD2.  Despite hearing that newborns spend most of their time in onesies, DH and I dolled up our girls in cute and comfy clothes practically from day one.  We're having a boy this time and have about the same amount as with the first two.  So basically the sky's the limit for outfits.  We used sleep sacks at night for easy diaper changes.  Also a couple pair of scratch mittens, a couple beanies, sun hats or bonnets, a light jacket, socks, and booties or crib shoes.  It depends on your style.  If you think you'd enjoy fussing over the baby's clothes, don't deny yourself the opportunity.  They grow so fast!

How many blankets does the baby need?

One blanket stroller, 6 receiving blankets (which are super versatile), one or two swaddling blankets.  Also, a nice touch is a quilt to decorate the nursery; later it can move to the toddler bed.

    How many sheets?

    3-4

    How many pacifiers?

One to start.  The hospital may give you one.  Your LO may or may not take it.  DD1 used hers past her second birthday.  We thought we'd never wean her off it.  DD2 never used one.

We are using disposable. How many diapers do we need? wipes?

Definitely only a pack to start.  The baby might leap forward into the next size or stay small for a while.  You can stock up on unscented wipes, IMO.

What do I need that I am not thinking of?

Breast milk storage bags, if you plan on nursing.  Nursing pads.  Modesty cover.  Nursing pillow.  Sling.  A wipes container and changing pad for the diaper bag.  A couple changes of clothes also in case of messes--I just packed pajamas.  Hand sanitizer.  Gas drops.  A thermometer.  A nail file.
Also, something high contrast to stimulate LO's vision.  I just made some black and white abstract posters, framed them, and hung them beside baby's crib.  I was amazed at how often I caught them staring at them.  GL
