Trying to Get Pregnant

Reality TV Question

I don't usually put much stock into reality TV but after watching Tina's gyno visit on Newlyweds: The First Year, I'm a bit curious. On the show, the gyno told her and her husband to have intercourse on the 12th, 14th, and 16th days of her cycle and not to go overboard. My DH and I have just tried to have as much intercourse as we can during my fertile window but have yet to conceive after 3 months.

Is there any truth to what this doctor said? How long between ovulation and my period can we conceive?

First of all, please don't educate yourself on conception through reality TV.

I invite you to read the TTGP blog at the top of the thread where you'll find plenty of great info.

Temping and charting would help you to know your cycle and your fertile window. There is not a fixed frame for everyone.

I'm on CD19 and I might Ovulate today or tomorrow.

  • I believe the doctor is basing this off of a 28 day cycle where ovulation usually occurs around day 14.  This is NOT necessarily true for each woman.  That is why charting, temping etc is recommended so you know exactly when your fertile window is.

    Don't get discouraged!  There's a 20% chance each month.

  • There is some truth to it, but not a lot. This is so-so advice for women who have a regular 28 days cycle....but even then, just because a woman has a regular cycle doesn't mean she will O on CD14.  The last time I got pregnant I didn't ovulate until CD34, so had I followed this advice, we would have been wasting our efforts, and then not doing anything at the right time.

Right now I am as close to a regular cycle as I've ever been but I didn't O until CD18.  Following that advice we would have hit O-5 and O-3...not horrible timing but you get my point.  Most women do not O on the textbook CD14.

If you really want to know when you O, I suggest you read the newbie link, sign up on fertility friend.com (it's free) and learn how to temp and use OPKs.

  • I will just echo what others have said. The only way to know for sure when your Oing is by temping so don't only count on it being around CD14.

    To address this...

How long between ovulation and my period can we conceive?

Once you ovulate you really only have around a 24 hour time frame to let sperm meet egg.  Then the rest of the time before your period is known as the 2ww (2 week wait) where implantation may occur.

I encourage you to lurk on the boards and read the blog. There is a ton of info that will show you there is only a 20% chance of conceiving each month.

  • I agree with what pps said.

I do have an average cycle and my dr instructed us to have sex every other day from cd1018. That's what we shoot for. I advise you to use opks and at least temp to confirm O.

    Gl!

Eta: that should be cycle day 10 thru 18
  • My fertility doctor told us, 5 days before you ovulate, until 5 days after you ovulate, every other day.

That being said, figuring out when you ovulate is the key. In the beginning, my advice is to just pay attention to your cervical mucus. When you start to get a lot of discharge, and it's stretchy then you are probably ovulating within 48 hours.

I haven't seen the show, so I don't know if they just wanted to start trying, or what, but the advice to not go overboard is really important. It takes "healthy" couples up to a year to conceive (which SUCKS I know) and if you sex starts being scheduled, it stops being fun.

Infertility can kill your sex drive, you start only having sex when the doctors tell you to. You spend your life living in 2 week cycles of trying and waiting. It is really hard on your emotions and your realationship.

My advice is to keep an eye out for your C.M. but don't start charting and temping right away. Have sex when you want to, but every other day is best. If the time comes, a doctor will help you decide how to progress, so just try not to add the stress yet. (Almost impossible, but it's worth trying)

  • Thanks so much to everyone for the advice! DH and I promised each other to wait 6 months before we start "going crazy" with all the TTC stuff, but that being said I'm currently doing a bit of charting and don't think it would hurt to start tracking CM and temp (which I'm not currently doing).

It's only been 3 months and already I'm going crazy those last 2 weeks and of course let down when I only have one pink line. I'll take everyone's advice, though, and read the blogs and community posts. You're all already helping!

^ This. And also, I think the only reason a physician would suggest every other day would be if there was a known issue with sperm count.

Doctors are not worried if you don't concieve until you've been actively trying a year (6 months if you're over 35 like me). So, don't you worry about it now either. It won't make matters any better if you do.

I know that it can be very frustrating; but I hope you find some comfort in that 3 months really isn't that long at all, especially since you are not "going crazy with TTC stuff" yet.

    Hang in there.

I saw that episode as well and wondered why they wouldn't choose the opportunity to give the correct facts and 'educate' the people watching. But yeah, that's reality TV. On the other hand, I'm starting to like that show. :
  • Me too, Maroon (I hate to admit :) ). I am taking the great advice I've seen since joining the board a few days ago... I started temp charting, ordered a basal thermometer, and am working on my lessons on fertilityfriend.com Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm looking forward to joining the community and getting to know everyone!
