KAGL08-I was reading in another post that you do not believe in time outs in the crib because it is their safe place. I totally get this. I have tried doing time outs in a chair but my daughter will fight for 45 min and she still will not get the 2 min time out done. Any suggestions? She is generally well behaved but she treats time out like a cat and mouse chase game.
Re: KAGL08 and others who have had success with time outs
IMO time outs are proof to your child that you mean business and you are the boss. KWIM? It's a battle of the wills and unfortunately the parent HAS to win or it's never going to work. Both my kids fought time outs, like it was their job. However, consistency is key when it comes to showing them you mean business. Each time they get up bring them back to time out and say "you are in time out." Yes, you will probably have to do it 10 times or even 50+ times the first few times, but then the will realize you are serious. If you've given up during timeouts in the past then your child knows that you will eventually give up now so she will just keep going until you give up. Show her you are serious.
Sounds lame, but watching "Nanny 911" and using her method on timeouts really helped me.
I once saw a parent I know basically sitting on their kid to restrain them and make them do time out. It was kind of weird. O_o
What a friend of mine did was strap her kid into the highchair. Now he stays in time out on his own so she doesn't have to do that anymore (and his little brother does also, I think because of his example).
I agree with this, except I do not talk to them when I put them back in time out... I do not want to do anything to provoke conversation, or any type of communication while the "time out" is happening. I explain why they are in a time out when I put them there, and then have them explain when they are done (if they are old enough)
Part of the time out is for the child to sit there without being restrained, so holding them, strapping them in a high chair, or even putting them in a PNP just so they are "contained" for the two minutes isn't helping in the long run. Goo luck!
