Transition to sippy cup

Any recommendations on when/how to introduce a sippy cup? Should I give him water in it or breast milk/formula? Should I only offer it to him during solid meals? Easton (7 months) has great hand coordination and is already able to hold the bottle by himself, for the most part. I was just curious when the transition should start.  Thanks!

Re: Transition to sippy cup

  • You could definitely start now.  I started J at 6 months.  He only takes a few sips of water really (they are allowed about an ounce a day at this age) but I fill it higher so he doesn't have to tip his head so far back.  He mainly chews the spout and plays with it but he definitely knows it goes in his mouth and gets some water out.

  • I think we started the sippy cup sometime around 6 months.  He mainly has it at DC, where they put water in it and he gets some practice.  It's one of the early stage cups, so it doesn't leak if tipped over.  When he uses a sippy at home, I don't think he gets much water out, mostly chews on rubber spout, and I assume it's the same at DC.

  • We started around 6 month also. He only gets it when he is in his high chair eating with us. We do BLW. He puts his sippy up to his mouth when he sees one of us drink from our glass. Lately he is trying to drink out of a regular cup so we might let him start experimenting with regular cups. I think I will start outside with only a diaper on. Play time and learning without flooding my kitchen!

DS started with a sippy cup around 5 or 6 months.  i decided it was time when he started trying to drink from my glass every time i went to drink it while i was holding him.  we've given him an open cup too, which he does great with, but i wanted something he could use without making such a mess.  he gets his sippy with water every time we eat at home, and i also give it to him with water when he's in his stroller while we're out shopping.  he does so well with it now that i don't even send bottles to school anymore- just his sippy and BM for his teacher to pour into it.  i definitely think it's a good idea to drink something yourself when LO first starts using the cup to make it easier to figure out what the heck it's for ;)

  • I'd start now. I just give DD water, mainly bc she spills or spits most of it back out, so I don't want to waste the breastmilk. She can hold her own bottle, but until she's more coordinated with the cup, I don't plan to send her milk to school in cups.

  • I started offering DD a sippy with breastmilk at about 7 months. She has never really taken a bottle, so it's been a bit of a slow process, but we are finally at the point where she will drink a couple oz out of it.
