Sleep regression

So for the first week everything was going great! We were putting her down awake at night and for naps, and she was asleep within minutes. Then we took away the magic sleep suit. Other than having to go in once or twice to lay her back down, things were still ok.
But suddenly, starting yesterday, as soon as you lay her down she stands up and starts screaming at the top of her lungs. I've tried going in and laying her back down, she just stands right back up and screams some more. I've tried just leaving her to cry, and she just paces back and forth along the rail screaming bloody murder. Right now she's jumping up and down and screaming. I don't know what to do. Help!

Re: Sleep regression

  • How long have you left her to cry? She knows how to put herself to sleep so at this point as long as she is no sick/teething etc I would say she just doesn't want to nap and it is behavioral. At that point with DS we usually let him cry until it is clear that he is not going to nap. (Depending on how hard he is whining or crying for him it might be 30-90 minutes. If he is just chilling in his crib awake we leave him his entire regular nap time.) Then we will just go get him. This is a very rare occurrence in our house though so it is more of an anomaly.

So far it's been 20 minutes with one check. I know she's exhausted bc when I went to check on her and laid her down, her eyes closed and she almost fell asleep right away. But as soon as I took my hands off of her, she rolled over and stood up and started screaming.

Sleep regressions are not fun. My 3 year old still has the occasional sleep regression. I would just stay consistent. Go in every 10 minutes, lay her down, tell her she's ok, and then leave. As my mom always reminds me, it's all just a phase.
Yup. This is what I was going to say too. It doesn't sound like she has been screaming for hours. I would just be firm and stick with it. GL!

I failed. After 40 minutes of screaming and my 4th time checking on her, I laid her down and patted her chest for a minute telling her mommy loves her and she needed to get some sleep. She fell asleep while I was patting her chest. I'm glad she got a little sleep... Only 20 minutes, but it was a fail in terms of sleep training. Sigh.

And here we are at round 2. Little girl is so tired and whiny. Can barely keep her eyes open while nursing. And I put her in her crib and she stands up and jumps and screams. Aargh.

  • TJ, have you looked at the sleep lady shuffle? It is more of a long term gentle sleep training, but perhaps worth a look.

I don't necessarily see this as a fail. FWIW I rocked DS to sleep for naps until he was down to one nap a day. (I think that happened around 14 months.) We sleep trained for night sleep at about 5-6 months though. You need to find the balance that works for you and the method that works for you. Seriously, this sleep stuff is difficult to figure out! You are doing a great job, Mom!

Glad she finally fell asleep.  My big rule with sleep is consistency in what you do.  It's not a failure to go and get her if she's simply refusing to sleep and won't stop screaming, but at the same time, be consistent in putting her down, telling her it's time to sleep now, etc. I definitely let my kids cry a bit before going back in and I don't get them back up until at least half an hour if not even a little longer.  Often times they are fighting sleep for fear of missing out on something more exciting but eventually they will give in and sleep.  At some point though, as a mom, you just know it's not going to happen right then so you get them and then try again later..........or, like happened to you, they will fall asleep at some point!

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • TJ, so sorry that you and E are having a difficult day.  I honestly do not think your sleep training has "failed."  E is probably just going through a developmental phase; hopefully it'll be short and pass soon.

Thanks pb! I didn't mean our sleep training as a whole had failed, just my treatment of her regression wasn't keeping with the whole sleep training plan. I guess sometimes you just have to do what you have to do and hope for the best. Thanks again for your support.
