Sorry - I'm sure you get this a lot - Ring Slings

I tried looking through the board..

I have an 8 month old - and I use the ergo a lot, and we have a pouch sling that I used a lot when she was younger and I've used here and there lately - but I'm starting to see the benifits of an adjustable sling - for hip carry, snuggle in close.. adjust as I lose weight, etc.

Obviously there is the Maya wrap - are there different styles - or are they all different brands / fabric / rings - but the same basic styles.  Are there pros / cons?  I know to get one that is made by a 'reputable' source - especially since I'm likely to use it with our next baby as an infant and worry about the suffocation, etc

  • The most important thing with a ring sling and a newborn is to learn to use it properly - you want to use mostly a hold that has baby upright and visible, not cradled down in a pocket. With an older baby, it's important to learn how to spread it over your back/shoulder to distribute weight for comfort.

Mine is just a no-name WAHM-made one I got off diaperswappers, but it's made of two layers of sturdy cotton and proper ring sling rings and has worked great for me. Sleeping Baby Productions is a good brand. Nothing wrong with Maya Wrap or Zolowear, either. There are less great ones out there - typically homemade by people that don't really know what they're doing. Avoid anything with plastic rings, and a nice pleated shoulder makes it easier to use.

  • Well I hit up a friend of mine who has a maya and found they aren't using it - so I'm goign to borrow it for a while and test it out! :)

So now I'm off to google videos and turtorials and such :)

The different shoulders do wear differently - if you have a babywearing group near you that would be a good way to try out some different things before you buy....if you don't like the Maya.

My personal favorite is Comfy Joey.  Sleeping Baby Productions, Kalea, Maya wrap, and Sakura Bloom are all good names to go with.
  • I have a Sakura bloom sling.  I love it but at 11 months I can only use it 20 or 30 minutes at a time because of his weight. I keep it in my diaper bag to use for quick wears when we are out and about.  If I am planning to wear him at the park zoo etc i use my beco because it is way better on my back etc...with that being said you can use the ring sling with older kids it is just not comfortable.  Just last week my three year old fell and wanted to be carried around so I wore her on my hip for about 15 minutes  or so.

  • I like my Maya wrap. It has a couple specific uses that the mei tai doesn't do as well for me - the newborn cradle or upright carry (recommend watching a reliable video to get it right) and an infant hip carry. I use the mei tai when out and about but love the maya for newborn carry at church and eating out, and the hip carry for times at home that baby really wants up but I have stuff I need to get done with two hands.

I've considered making my own for this third baby, with my current wrap as a pattern.

  • Thanks all!  I'm going to get the ring sling on Sunday and I cannot wait - my pouch sling must not be fitting right because hip carry in it is a nightmare lately and she desperately wants me to hold her all evening while I do dishes, cook, etc - so I'm hoping that I can get the maya to work for me as its free and I would love it to work for this purpose.  I love and use my ergo when out and about for the double shoulder weight distributions :)

  • FYI I got the Maya wrap from our friend this weekend and I'm in LOVE and so is she.  This thing is 100 times better then my pocket sling - and it just feels good :)

I wouldn't wear it for hours on hours of walking / out and about - but I wore it on and off all day saturday and at a party for over an hour on Sunday and various hip / snuggle holds and she loved it - more then the ergo - I think it lets her look around more (In hip carry at least) then the ergo.
