Swim Diapers?

I had used Pampers Splashers on my DD over the winter for our swim class at the Y...I had bought a box of size 3-4 which go up to 37 lbs thinking they would last me through the summer. However the last two times I put DD in one, we have had pee leak everywhere- EVERYWHERE!- before we even got to the pool. I am seriously thinking I am putting them on wrong LOL! They seem to fit her just fine, she is 14 mo and between 22-23 lbs, and I pull them way up to make sure they are on there. Anyone else have this issue? I bought the next size up this weekend just in case, but they seem super big. Any advice on what you do for LO during pool/beach season would be great! TIA!

Re: Swim Diapers?

  • Pee leaked everywhere because swim diapers are made to hold in poop only, not absorb pee. They would just swell up with the water from the pool.

this! I had not thought about that till one day last summer when we were at the pool with friends and my GF's LO peed all over the blankets.  Totally makes sense doesn't it? That's why I don't put K in her diaper and suit till we are actually AT the pool now.

I think for everyone, even non-CDing parents, reusable swim diapers are such an easy, cheap option. $10 and you've got your LO's bum covered for swimming all summer. Disposable swim diapers are expensive!

i agree, I bought the iplay swim suit with built in swim diaper and I don't have to worry about packing swim diapers. I love them.

  • Just echoing previous posters - swim diapers don't absorb pee. They are only made to contain poop.

When I took DS to swim lessons last summer, a number of parents would put a regular diaper on LO, put the swim diaper over it, then just pull down the swim diaper and remove the regular diaper right before the lessons began. I usually waited until we arrived at the pool to put on his swim diaper.

I've used Huggies swim diapers, as well as iPlay cloth swim diapers. Both worked well for us.

  • They're not intended to hold any pee. Don't put it on until right before you get in the water!  :)

Sorry, it keeps posting before I even start typing for no reason.

This is why, we don't put LO in the swim diaper until we're about to get into the pool.

I've been eying some cloth swim diapers, but I'm having trouble committing.  Specifically, the Charlie Banana ones at Target look good.

Do they absorb pee?  They seem easier because two of them could probably get us through a whole day at the beach.  We're constantly in and out of the water, laying around on our blanket and in the little tent - sometimes I feel like I'm changing DD's diaper constantly, and I often just give up and let her go in the water in her regular diaper.  Fingers crossed this is her last summer in diapers anyway.

Anything else I need to know?  Talk me into cloth swim diapers, please.

  • I love the Charlie Banana swim diapers. I used it all last summer for DD. I just bought the next size up for this summer. I love that they have a drawstring at the waist. (DD has a tiny waist but these fit great.) Never had an issue with them and they are so cute!

So glad to hear it!  We used iplay and flap happy last year - I love both, but I've been eyeing this Charlie Banana swim diaper since August and resisted buying since it was the end of "swim season"

This. They actually worked perfectly like they're supposed to if pee leaked everywhere.

    OMG that is adorable!!

I've had my eye on this one. Girly robots! I figure she can just wear it with a pink rash guard.

  • Thanks, everyone...sounds stupid but I really had no idea that pee would not absorb when on a dry baby. It does make sense though lol  Easy fix, will use up the ones I have and just put them on at the pool or beach. i did get a reusable one for $10 from onestepahead.com so will use that when we are out of the splashers.

Now I want to shop for those cute ones above though LOL!!!

  • We use the iplay swim diapers.  We still put a Huggies/Pampers disposable swim diaper underneath just in case, but they really work well.  I've seen them at target, buy buy baby, or online.
