Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Throwing blankets Paci out of crib

DD's new favorite thing to do is throw all her blankets and pacis out of her crib. She does it at nap time and bed time. And if she wakes in the middle of the night she throws them out and cries and screams until I come in.

At nap time I don't go in and pick them up for her. Shell usually fall asleep on her own. But when she wakes up in ye middle of the night I've been going in and getting them and holding her till she falls asleep. Obviously I've created a bad habit.

How do I break it??

Re: Throwing blankets Paci out of crib

  • We had this problem when DS was about 13 months and I stopped going in to get them and he stopped throwing them. Hard to listen to the crying but he learned.

  • We weaned the paci. It was the only solution other than going in several times a night to paci pop (which is ridiculous for a toddler). I guess you could use a paci leash to the crib side, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with it for safety reasons.

  • DD is notorious for doing this at nap time. I usually go in there twice and pick everything up and lay her back down. She finally goes to sleep but she won't unless she has everything back in the crib that she just threw out. ::sigh:: No advice but we're dealing with that too.
  • Unfortunately our 13 mo old does the same thing with his paci. Actually, even when he doesn't throw it out of his crib, sometimes he'll cry until DH comes in, at which point he will SPIT OUT his paci just so DH can put it back in. It has become a little ritual for him, even though I know he can go back to sleep on his own. We are psyching ourselves up to wean him off it and stop going in.

  • well the simplest answer to breaking this habit is to stop doing it.  Cold turkey.  It will suck for a few nights probably, but it's the easiest way to have her realize you're not going to keep coming in.
