Dumb swelling question

By 36 weeks with Lucy, I was jet puffed. By 39 weeks, the swelling was more of an issue because I was having higher levels of uric acid showing up on blood work. Thankfully my body was in early labor and I delivered her at 39/3.

This time, I've been silently smug at my good fortune of avoiding the horrible swelling. Until yesterday evening. When H and I got home, my legs and feet swelled so bad that the skin was stinging from the pressure. My calves looked so nasty. I didn't call (though H was begging me too) and I woke up looking less puffy. Well now, my ankles, feet, and calves are super swollen again and there's a line where my flip flops were.

Ugh, is this just late pregnancy normalcy that I lucked out avoiding until now or would you consider this SUDDEN swelling? I have an appt. Wednesday but I'm wondering if I should move it to tomorrow.

*I'm 39/1 for mobile users.

Re: Dumb swelling question

  • Is it just your legs/feet and have you been on your feet a lot both days you've noticed it?  I'd try drinking a ton of water and putting your feet WAY up (above your heart).  If the swelling spreads to your face and other areas I'd definitely call.  But I know my doctor just told me that because of our heat wave to expect some swelling.

I was on my feet a LOT yesterday, which is why I wasn't as worried as my husband. Today though, I've been sitting and walking around normally. I'll go ahead and try the old tricks and hopefully the swelling will go down again.

But this heat...yeah...I should have expected swelling. Oh well, this pregnancy is allllmost over.

  • I've been so swollen lately its ridiculous! With this heat, I forget what ankles look like. I think it's normal but trust your instincts, if you think there's something wrong call your doctor.

I'm a FTM so I can't say much, but from these last few weeks I can say that (at least for me) the swelling i have is just as you describe it -  everyday. I am on my feet a lot since I am a teacher but the last few days with the heat we've been having it has been the worst. So I'm thinking it is a normal late pregnancy thing but like PPs have said, keep an eye on it.

  • i had sudden swelling last week in my feet/ankles and asked my dr when i needed to be concerned - she told me if it didn't go down overnight, or if was extreme.  she did mention something about making sure that i wasn't swelling past my knees, which made me think that feet, ankles, and calves are all "normal".

That's a good point. As long as it goes down each night it doesn't concern me much.

  • If it's in your thighs, call. If its below your knees it's probably okay, but I would still your appt up to tomorrow.

  • I started getting this same type of extreme swelling in my feet, ankles, and calves around 34 weeks. My shoes didn't fit and I would have flip flop marks left behind after wearing. I did ask my OB about it and she told me it was normal and was not concerned because my blood pressure was always normal and I had no other complications going on in the pregnancy. The swelling would go away each night and would start back up the next day. My OB did warn me that it could take 2 weeks post pregnancy for it to go away and she wasn't kidding. This past Thursday was the two week mark and on Friday I had found my feet, ankles, and calves again.

  • Also consider your diet.  I know when I have something with a lot of salt a tend to swell up a lot more.  I know I should be avoiding it but I love me some pasta and french fries!

Repeating what's already been said, my doctor said as long as the swelling goes down overnight it's fine.  I've been icing my ankles every night and that seems to help, too.  But yeah, my cankles were so bad I couldn't flex my feet the other day.  It'll end soon!!
  • As all the pps said, my dr also said that there's nothing to worry about as long as it goes down overnight. I've been having the same issue where I get really swollen after a day of walking around but then it goes down overnight. Rest tonight and see if you are still having issues tomorrow morning.

  • I didn't get reaaly swollen until after delivery. They continually checked to see if it was an equal amount in both feet/legs, and would flex my feet back and ask if there was pain. I used this as my guide once I got home.
  • I have the same thing today.  To the point that when I get up, my cankles are feeling jiggly now :(

I called L & D and the on call doc because I went to CVS to check my blood pressure and it was 140/89.  They told me to go home drink water and keep my feet up the rest of the night.  So, here I am on couch rest watching OSO with my son.  :D

  • I'd say just keep an eye on your hands, face, etc. Feet by themselves seems pretty typical.

Said the girl who's never made it to a third tri. Ignore me. Listen to the others.
