Scratching

Does anyone else have a LO who scratches their head or face intentionally? DD does this whenever her arm escapes the swaddle, or while nursing, and she constantly has big, red scratches all over her head, forehead, and face because of it. I keep her nails as short as I can, and file them too, but they're still sharp. Our pediatrician told us to use hydrocortisone cream, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. I'd really like to progress to sleeping without swaddling her arms, especially since she is very close to being able to roll from her back to her stomach, but I am afraid to do this because of how much she scratches. Any suggestions?

Re: Scratching

  • Omg! You are not alone! DD has been doing this for weeks and we've tried everything you have and to no avail. I sure hope someone has some advice! Sorry I'm no help...I'm just glad we can commiserate. :-)

  • DS does this too. Right now he looks like he was on the losing end of a fight! LOL! I just started using lanolin on his head and I think it might be helping but maybe too soon to tell.

  • I don't have any advice on how to stop the need for scratching but I do know they put socks on a little ones hands at work that scratches themselves. They stay on better than those little mitten things.

  • My DS used to scratch himself all the time. Everyday he would have at least one new one. I would just express breast milk on any new or healing scratch, or I would just wash them with soap and water. I don't know if he was doing it intentionally but he stopped scratching his face so much when we stopped swaddling. I think maybe he was frustrated by the swaddle because he would always bust out of it. My suggestion maybe just stop swaddling and give it a couple nights and see how it goes.
