Our babies and newborns?

My friend just had a baby, and I don't really know where our babies fall as far as visiting etiquette. Most of us preferred that people didn't bring toddlers to visit in the very beginning, but what about babies 5-6 months? I brought LO to the hospital but she was napping, so it was a nonissue. Would you want them kept apart for a few weeks or is it okay because LO won't be touching them yet?

FWIW my LO isn't in daycare, so she's only exposed to adults, and hasn't been sick.

  • Oh, don't say that too loudly, or you'll jinx yourself. Had been wondering something similar. I concluded that one just asks unless the child is moible. I think then I would have someone else watch LO (or ask the friend to think about it but dont need answer right away).

  • I was just thinking about this, too.  I figure that I was (still am?) a crazy FTM that didn't want kids around my newborn so I would extend the same courtesy.  We did have a couple non-day care, non-school age kids visit, though, and it was OK.  It's also not cold and flu season now...

  • I wouldn't mind. Like pp said our babies are not super mobile yet so there is no real chance for germ spreading.

  • Two good friends of mine have recently had babies and I brought DD to visit both in the hospital and at their houses. I just don't hold the new baby as much as I would have wanted to before I had LO.

  • Thanks! I was thinking along those lines but I wanted some more opinions :)

  • I think it would depend on the household.  How about just asking?  We recently visited with close friends with a two week old.  We brought along DS but made sure to wash our hands before touching the new baby and didn't put DS anywhere near the newborn.  They were totally fine with it.
