Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Suggestions for a climber

My DS is almost 1 and he has started climbing he tried to climb into his pack and play from the floor and he is also working on climbing out of it. He has managed to climb onto our couch as well. I'm really worried that this will take place in our crib as well so I've been looking for alternatives. He's too young for a toddler bed but I did read a little about putting his double checking the baby proofing in his room and put his crib mattress on the floor which seemed like it would be safer than waiting for him to climb out of the crib as he's trying to do with the pack and play. Do any of you have your LO sleep like this or possibly have another suggestion for me?

Re: Suggestions for a climber

  • I'm with Lala.

My kid can climb like a monkey. Chairs, couches, at the playground, whatever.

She has yet to bail her crib though. She loves it and has no desire to want to.

  • My babies have been climbing onto the couch for months and have never climbed out if their cribs. I don't think the two things are related, but I'm not an expert. I would wait until he's actually trying to climb out of the crib before changing his sleeping arrangement. As far as WHAT to do if he does start climbing out of the crib, I have no advice there. I just don't think you need to worry yet.

  • Does he wear a sleep sack to bed? This greatly reduces mobility. My kiddo doesn't try to climb out when in a sleep sack.
  • I don't think climbing things means you need to worry about the crib yet.  DD doesn't climb much (stairs, short boxes but can not get on the couch or anything yet) but she's been trying to climb out of her crib for over a month now.  She's not big/strong enough to get out yet but we're thinking of converting her crib soon.
