NBR: FL Vacation Questions

We're trying to plan a family vacation for September/October and have settled on Florida. We usually go the Panhandle, typically Panama City Beach or Destin, but we're considering somewhere near Tampa like Clearwater, St. Pete, Treasure Island, Siesta key etc. We're considering this because it would allow a direct flight, keep us on the gulf with hopefully similar beaches and allow the opportunity to go to Disney for a day or two if we decide too. So, a few questions...

1. Which are the beaches near Tampa are most similar to Destin/PCB?
2. Which beach would you recommend for a family with a 20monthold who mostly wants to rent a decent condo on a white sand beach to relax most days and have plenty of casual restaurants nearby?
3. Those who have been to both, what are the main differences or potential disappointments after loving Destin/PCB?

Thanks ladies!!!!!

Re: NBR: FL Vacation Questions

  • Hi there! I used to live in Tampa & Clearwater- now I live in Dunedin- so I can help... I hope!

    1) Clearwater & St. Pete Beach are close to Tampa. Clearwater is VERY touristy though- but has a lot of shops and places to eat.. I LOVE Honeymoon Island & Caladesi Island. Both are white sand, palm tree, blue water beaches. And depending when you are down here (not during spring break) and what days of the week (not the weekend or any major holiday) they are usually pretty empty, which is nice!

    2) well I kind of answered this- but I would go to Honeymoon Island. We go every Monday when DH is off. We go around 8:30 or 9am and have the beach to ourselves until about noon or 2. Obviously we will see people out walking around but we have an upfront parking spot and we get a whole picnic table to ourselves. It's really nice! Plus we don't have to lug all our stuff so far!!

    3) I've never been to Destin. So I am not sure. I've been to a lot of Florida beaches in the Tampa/Clearwater/Dunedin/St. Pete/Largo areas and Honeymoon is by far my favorite. You can google it and look it up and see. There are places to eat and snack huts. Rent boogie boards and surf. And there are different places you can go within the 'park'-- here's the website https://www.floridastateparks.org/honeymoonisland/

    Hope this helps!
