Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Time out question

I was just reading a previous post about time outs. DS is almost 18 months and I have been using the pack-n-play for the time out area for major tantrums and when he ignores my "no's" when he's climbing furniture, etc. I read he should be in time out for 60-90 seconds but if he is still screaming and flailing do I still get him out or wait until he calms down more? Not sure if I'm doing this right. TIA!

Re: Time out question

  • To me at this age it's all about learning the concept.

I do time out for very few things, but when I do, when time is up, time is up. Then I go get her, talk to her and hug her. I mean at 18 months I feel like you'd be sitting there all day waiting for her to calm down. Very few toddler infractions are worth waging a screaming battle over for an hour just so she's calm and does time out "right."

Hell, by that point, toddler will have long forgotten the issue. At this age Time out to me is just all about taking a break from the situation that caused the problem.

I'm all about short, sweet, let's move on.

  • 1.5 is awful young for time out. Most experts don't recommend them until much later.

sure, I'm on board for removing a child from the kitchen if they keep trying to climb the kitchen table. I think forcing him to sit in a corner is just going to create a power struggle. If he's trying to climb the table, first off don't say no. Offer a simple explanation and redirect. An example-"climbing the table can hurt. Lets climb x instead." Then take him in your room and help him climb on your bed or the couch.

Toddler tantrums are mostly an unmet need so you dont need to punish for them. Hunger, exhaustion, under/overstimulated are pretty common causes. I would see what helps resolve the tantrum the quickest. Some kids can be redirected to something else. Some kids need a few minutes to work it out. Some kids want a hug. When the tantrum is over, try to fix the underlying issue.
