Beginning Potty Training

Lo has been pointing to his diaper when he goes and running to get changed, so we think it may be a good idea to start training. He has about half a pack of his diapers left so my question is did you/will you use pull ups when you start potty training? Im wondering if I should buy another pack of diapers or go straight to pull ups. I'm excited and nervous at the same time.

Any recommendations for articles to read/potties/pull up brands are greatly appreciated!

Re: Beginning Potty Training

  • If you really want to attack it, use pull ups ONLY at night or if you are going to be out and about all day and not near a potty. When I potty trained the kids I nannied for (way back in the day), I bought those thick underwear (thicker cotton in front and back-get lots) they need to really feel when they pee or poo, diapers and pull ups still absorb... so they don't feel it as much. I dedicated a week... we watched lots of shows and at home activities. Lots of fluids to get the "juices" flowing. And then LOTS and LOTS of trips to the potty. I would take him every 10 to 20 min at first (10-20 after leaving potty), you will be hanging out waiting for something to happen in the bathroom a lot!!... read books while on the potty. The trick is to get him to pee in the potty and then make a big deal about it (wether you throw a mini potty party or do a chart or little treats) He is learning the new feeling of peeing not in his diaper or pants. When there is an accident... "uh-oh! We go pee pee in the potty, rush to potty and sit (even though there might be nothing left)... praise for sitting on potty :) Boys are easier then girls when you start to venture out. I used to have a kids potty in the back of the car (had an SUV) so if we were driving or somewhere with no potty we had one near by. GOOD LUCK!! It takes time and lots of patience :)

  • We use cloth, so when we PT'd, we just stopped using diapers. He was either in underwear or naked during the day, and we use a diaper at night and nap time. It took us about a week, but my son was older (27 months) and more than ready.

We used cotton training pants, as pull-ups are not that helpful. They don't help the child realize they're wet. We bought ours at Kmart, and I think you can get them at Walmart too. If he's showing interest, do regular trips to the bathroom, every 30 minutes, but don't be surprised if he's not ready yet.

Even if he's not ready, you can still put a potty seat in the bathroom and encourage him to sit on it every now and then.

Oh, I like the no cry potty training book, she has a great checklist quiz kind of thing to assess readiness.

She has the readiness quiz and some other great info for free on her website. I think this is a really great place to start.

  • With DD we quit diapers cold turkey.  I have an e-book called "The Three Day Potty Training Method"  Worked like a charm and never looked back.  I've sent it to several friends and worked for them too.

  • We took a slower approach, so in the beginning she was still in diapers. Once she was starting to get the idea of telling us when she needed to go and staying dry for longer periods of time we went cold turkey on diapers during the day. No pull ups, because I honestly didn't feel like paying for them. They are more expensive and IMO not that much different than a diaper. The only time we used pull up was for long car trips (over an hour) until she was staying dry through naps.

I would recommend checking out some of the readiness quizzes/tests out there. I forget which book I read, but the check list was similar to the No Cry book.
