STMs: Waterproof mattress pad?

Another registry question :)

DH and I ordered our mattress and received it in the mail. It's waterproof (which I was not expecting, but it's great!).

I'm assuming it's completely unnecessary to have a mattress pad as well, correct? Is it easier just to have a mattress pad that can easily be thrown in the wash, or is it just as easy to wipe up a mattress?

Re: STMs: Waterproof mattress pad?

  • I have always used the pads to throw in wash....my only thought is once baby gets bigger and you lower crib might get tough to wipe off mattress....I knowI wouldn't be able to do DS's with my growing belly....its a challenge to even change sheets lol....

Our mattress is waterproof too, but I registered for 2 waterproof covers after some input from STMs.  It seems like it's easier to just pull the cover off and wash than to have to wipe down the actual mattress.

  • Honestly, we never used ours. I never once even put it in DS's crib. I just don't see the point because the mattress is already waterproof. But then again, he never really had a blow out explosion or anything like that in his crib though. I guess we got lucky.

Yes. You'll want to crib some covers. Makes for quick crib changes.

  • We still used ours. I thought it was much easier to pull the pad off and wash it with the sheets then try to scrub the mattress. Esp since you can't reach the mattress and have to pull it out. Yada, yada, maybe I'm just lazy.

All of this for us too!!
  • We have mattress covers for our water proof mattress. It is just easier to change. I also layered them so it was sheet, pad, sheet, pad. So in the middle of the night I ripped off a sheet and pad and already had another sheet and pad on the mattress.

This is great if you are home alone at night and are trying to change the sheet because baby is sick and no one else is there to help. I got to the point I could it with one hand while holding baby in the other. I have mad skills.

  • We didn't get waterproof pads, but we did buy a cushioned mattress pad to make it softer. Those mattresses are loud and crinkly and very cold under sheets. DD1 didn't sleep in her crib until she was 7 months so I felt comfortable giving her a soft surface to sleep on.

I'd definitely recommend getting a waterproof pad for your bed though! Because of nursing (and then bedsharing) she was with us a lot and let me tell you- there were dozens of times she spit up, peed, I leaked milk, etc everywhere and I was SO glad I had the cover on our mattress.
