Successfully lengthened naps??

Is it possible?

We've been Ferberizing for 4 days. Things are getting much better. Naps are still only 30 minutes & I wouldn't mind but DD clearly needs longer (wakes rubbing her eyes, moody, etc.).

When she wakes I wait about 10 minutes before getting her in hopes she'll go back to sleep but so far it a no go.

She usually takes 2 naps a day, sometimes 3 but the third one ends up being late & I need to wake her from it so it doesn't intefere with bedtime. Help!

Re: Successfully lengthened naps??

  • I didn't know if it was just time that helped, or sleep/nap training that helped.  We did sleep training & nap training (Ferber) when DS was 4 months.  He was down to 20-min naps at that time, so I was basically putting him down for naps/getting him up all.day.long.

After about a week or 2, his naps gradually lengthened to 30 minutes, then to 45 minutes.  I was in shock the first time he napped for more than an hour (about 1 month after we initially started sleep training).  He then even went to town and napped for 2-3 hours at a time.

Now at almost 7 months, he's on a much more predictable schedule.  He naps 3x a day and each nap is between 1hr 15m to 1hr 30 m.

What time is her 3rd nap and what time is bed time?

DS gets up between 5-6am. 1st nap 8:30a->10a. 2nd nap 12:30->2p. I make sure he goes down for his 3rd nap no later than 4:30p and gets up no later than 6p. Bedtime is 8p.

  • Since you just started with Ferber I think it should get better with time. Once she starts learning to put herself back to sleep she should stay down for her naps longer. You may be able to keep her up longer between naps which may help her sleep longer. When we started sleep training, DS's naps were exactly 45 minutes long. Once he was successfully sleep trained at night it still took about a month before his naps really improved. He now takes 2-3 naps all at least 1.5 hours long and sometimes as long as 3 hours.

She's been waking between 630-7:30, first nap 9:30 or 10, second nap around 2 & then sometimes needs a little nap around 430 but if she doesn't take it is a fuss pot from 6 to 8 pm which is bed time.

Listening to you both I think maybe time will do the trick.

I'm not sure what ferberizing is but I laydown with my baby when he naps and it definitely effect how long he sleeps. He takes two a day now. I am nursing so it might be different for me but in the morning I nurse him while we lay down, once he is down I use the time to get things done. In the afternoon I usually nap with him and he will sleep for about two hours. Maybe he just needs you there... I believe if your baby needs the closeness then give it to them, some are more needy than others. I co slept with my oldest son as well, I had no issues getting him in his own bed later on.
  • I've found my son takes longer naps when we have an active day. I let his morning nap be a cat nap. Sometimes 30 minutes sometimes an hour. It varies. Then we'll either go for a walk, store, pool, anything really. After that his next nap is always at least 1 1/2 hours and sometimes up to 2 hours. He last nap is about 2-3 hours before bed and it varies as well.
