Just discovered soy intolerance (in addition to dairy)

I'm so bummed.  Last week I switched from coconut milk creamer in my coffee to soy milk creamer.  DS was spitting up like crazy (he has reflux and dairy intolerance) - like splatter on the floor multiple times a day.  I realized the new symptoms started the same time I switched coffee creamers.  I guess it's not a big deal, but I was really hoping he would start to outgrow his dairy intolerance, only to discover he can't handle soy either.  As soon as I stopped the soy milk creamer, his spit-up episodes decreased dramatically and happened immediately.

DS is 7 months.  When did you start introducing dairy and/or soy back into your diet?  DS's allergist said I should start introducing dairy slowly into my diet now otherwise DS could develop a true milk allergy in the future.  I had been eating small amounts of dairy, but I stopped once he became a vomiting madman (lol) - I was freaking out it was because of the dairy.

Thanks ladies!!!

Sorry you have another intolerance.  Dietary restrictions are so hard!  My pedi said to wait until 9 months.  If she still reacted then, wait until 12.

  • Thank you for posting this. I have been dairy free for 6 months and didn't know that I needed to slowly introduce dairy. I miss it so, but I'm scared of the gas fo rLO. Did your pedi have any suggestions as how to start putting some dairy back into your diet slowly? I'm sorry to hijack your thread as I don't have a valid answer to your question.

  • I haven't given DS any dairy or eaten any myself yet, and he is 14 months old. I accidentally had some soy when he was about 12 months and he got really gross stools from it. So I don't think he's outgrowing his intolerances any time soon.

That is interesting about the milk allergy.. I had not heard that. But we have not been to an allergist. I haven't received any advice from our pedi about reintroducing anything except that most babies outgrow their intolerances around 12 months. Obviously not the case for us...

Sorry I couldn't be of more help! I can't remember if you've checked in on the MSPI Moms weekly check-in here, but I post it on Monday mornings. You might get some more advice there, or you can look through our past check-ins on the blog archive, mspimoms.blogspot.com. GL!

Sorry, I know it's frustrating.  I've been off all dairy and soy (even soybean oil/lecithin) for 7 months.  2 weeks ago, when DS2 turned 9 months, we started adding back soy.  So far so good.  I'm adding dairy back (slowly) this weekend.

DS1 had the same issue and was over it by 9.5 months age.

I wanted to try soy sooner, but was just too afraid!  Good luck to you.

Someone asked suggestions on adding dairy back slowly.... Just pick a few food items, like bread (many white bread varieties contain dairy), coffee creamer (I drink a little half caf coffee), etc., that contain milk/casein/whey but are not heavy dairy products.  I'm calling coffee creamer not heavy simply because I don't use a lot of it.  Then add back stuff like cheese and yogurt.  Then a big glass of milk, if you like to drink it.  And ice cream.

  • I'm beginning to wonder if any expert knows what the heck they are talking about because they all say something different. I was told by 2 pedi GIs to be absolutely militant in avoiding dairy and soy until a year in order to allow LO's gut to heal so he could hopefully tolerate dairy in the future. DS did not tolerate dairy at a year or 15 months, but very recently I've been able to slowly add back dairy items (I did one slice of cheese a day for like 2 weeks) into my diet and he is doing fine so far. I'm trying him on a bite of yogurt tomorrow and going from there. If it makes your LO uncomfortable, I would personally continue to keep it out of my diet and see what happens at a year.

This....  I could lose my mind with all of the opinions!  I honestly trust mothers' opinions better than doctors.

I can't believe how much better my son is doing since I stopped the soy coffee creamer.  He is barely spitting up at all the past few days.  I never cut out soy lecithin and he is able to tolerate that, thankfully.  I think I'll try a little dairy next week (just bread or a muffin) and see how he does.  The allergist said to feed him the dairy - a little yogurt or some dairy-based formula.  But i don't agree with that, and I would rather eat the dairy myself.  I feel like if I fed it to my son it would be more difficult for him to handle.

I just wish it wasn't so difficult to determine if fussiness is because of teething or tummy pains.  I think I'll be able to figure it out by the amount of his spit-up.  Wish me luck!  And thanks for all the advice.  I will start checking in to the Monday MSPI posts now!
