August 2011 Moms

More tornadoes.

Big storm with tornadic potential headed right to my part of town. I've got my shelter ready to go. It's about 20 miles away right now.

Send some good thoughts to us Okies that we're all safe tonight. This should be the last major threatening storm for this spring.

  • We lost our internet/phone service for a few hours but we're all okay.

We were crammed into the hall bathroom with an emergency radio. A tornado passed about a mile south of us, but our house is okay. I was having a hard time convincing DD to keep the bicycle helmet on so I'm really glad we didn't "need" it.

I managed to get a text message out to my SIL, so she spread the word that we were fine since our communications were down.

  • It's very rare for us to actually be in danger. The last time one got this close to us was about 10 years ago. I've been here long enough to know where to go, what to bring, what to do.

One of the problems they had tonight was too many people getting out in their cars trying to out-run it, instead of sittin' tight in their shelters. When the tornado was ON the ground a mile from my house I got a call from my mom asking if we'd left the house yet. I had no plans to try and put three cats, a toddler and all our important things in the car in that kind of time-frame.

Apparently all those people trying to "escape" had to abandon their vehicles and take shelter in gas stations, stores, etc. because there were so many people trying to head south that the highway was at a standstill... and the tornado took an unexpected turn and went south.
