Re: Brag Day Wednesday!

  • DD is getting really good in her little wheelchair.  She's been pointing to the ducks across the street all week and tonight she finally got up the courage to cross the street and chase after them!  Seeing her roll around and have so much fun was an amazing thing for me.  I sometimes get sad thinking that she won't be able to run around like other kids, but tonight she made me realize that she'll be just as active as other kids are.

Today was DS's last day of preschool.  In the two years he has been there

He went from speaking in 2-3 word sentences to label and get needs met to working on social language and talking every ones ear off.

He went from parallel interaction to having friends. Two of which are really solid reciprocal friendships and a ton are more than just peers.

He went from dumping and not really appropriately playing with toys to cooperatively pretending with props and toys (still pretty basic but awesome). He still prefers more structured activities or chase type games.

He went from being super timid on play ground structures to scaring the crap out of me on the regular with his daring.

He went  from not being able to independently sit for carpet time for any amount of time to sitting the whole time, mostly paying attention.

he went from barely making a mark on paper to drawing him self as a stick figure (minus the body line) and planning his center play including writing the lines for the words in the sentence.  Seven lines for the teacher to write "I am going to be the Fireman" etc (part of the particular curriculum, Tools of the Mind, which has been an amazing fit for him)

he went from his differences being glaringly obvious (even through Mommy goggles) and making him unable to function in a learning environment,  to differences that are still present (if less obvious) but he is completely functioning in the classroom.

he has the academic basics down (counting, recognizing letters, writing the first few letters of his name, rhyming, matching beginning sounds etc)

All of his teachers say he's ready for K (he will be one of the youngest with a Sept b-day).  We spent time in the K classroom familiarizing him with it and the teacher (who seems like an amazing fit), we have a social story book with pictures from his preschool SpED teacher.  He is so freaking excited for Kindergarten.  I am VERY hopeful for this transition.

Now on to keeping him engaged over the Summer.

That is such a great brag!  Thanks for sharing and giving me hope.  :)

  • D.F. that list of accomplishments is awesome! I just started keeping a journal of DD1 and I'm sure looking back one day and seeing those strides will be so rewarding.

This week at OT, DD1 showed marked improvement with drawing vertical lines. I tried to encourage practice in a variety of fun ways to make it seem like play and not work.

DD2 did excellent at PT with core control while sitting on the big exercise ball. She may hit her sitting unassisted goal before the outlined time frame!

DD3 is mostly typical in her development, but I would also like to brag that she is really getting quick and efficient with her arm crawl!

  • Yay, d.f. and B!

I just wanted to post that we're having a garage sale today, and people are so amused by DD1. She introduces herself to everyone, and she started out asking, "Are you here to help with the garage sale?" and by the end of the day was asking, "What can we sell to you?"

She was hilarious when it came to a twight turtle that I had labeled for sale. She kept asking everyone if they liked turtles, and would ask them if they would like to buy it. She really gave the hard sell! Our last customer of the day had a toddler girl, and DD1 finally made a successful sale. I'm going to give her the $3. :)
