Babies: 6 - 9 Months

distracted eater

My LO is almost 7 months old but over the last 2.5 months his eating has become worse and worse. He used to be a good at eating, eating about 6 oz per feed and sometimes more 6 feeds per day however, he now won't eat more than 2.5 oz. He gets very distractred and just seems not interested in eating. My other two take their feeds no problems but his volumes have been dropping.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this? What did you do? I have tried waiting longer to see if he is now hungry, which doesn't work. I am now essentially cluster feeding and feeding ALL the time but this strategy is ridiculous as I have triplets.

Ahhhh, sooo frustrated and worried. TIA

Re: distracted eater

  • Are you bfing?  If you are not and you are strictly bottle feeding have you tried a faster nipple?

  • Yes, I am bottle feeding and have tried a faster nipple I am at the fastest for the brand I am using. Not making a difference. Thanks for the suggestion but have tried it.

I have this problem with my DD. I feed her in the nursery with no one else in there. that's the only way she'll eat an entire bottle. This is fine at home but at daycare, she just doesn't eat as well. I imagine my solution is not really an option with triplets. Good luck!

  • how does he eat at night?  My LO is the most efficient eater in her one MOTN feeding because of lack of distraction.

And how is he with solids?

I don't have any suggestions other than feed him in the same place in a darkened, quiet room

  • Thanks for the suggestions the dark room we have tried and doesn't make one once of difference.

He doesn't eat at night as they all sleep through the night. He is doing great on solids.

i had the exact same issue when DS was around that age.  after several days, i gave up trying and just let him eat what he would eat.  i did my best to minimize distractions- dark, quiet room, no talking or music- and then decided to just ride it out.  after about 10 ish days of crappy eating, he ramped it up and started eating every 90-120 minutes, and he would drain both sides where he would previously only take one (i BF) and then a day or two after that, his eating returned to "normal".  i think my stressing over him not eating was making the situation worse, so in the end sitting back and trusting that he would take what he needed when he needed it was what worked for us.

  • This sounds just like my DD. It has been very frustrating! And we tried everything that you said. Dark room, loud room, warm bottle, cold bottle, holding her in different positions, different bottles and nothing seemed to work. Sometimes she would have as little as 1/2 an oz. and then 3 hours later barely have 2 and would constantly fluctuate throughout the day. Our pedi had us track it to see how many oz she was actually getting in a 24 hour period. After doing that with all her little feedings she was still getting up to 25-28 oz so the doc wasn't concerned. Honestly I've just given up on trying to fight her to eat. When I did that she went longer stretches3-4 hours and began to eat more and better (she would constantly pull away from the bottle look and around and then go back to it for a couple mins and repeat) I also think that she's just somewhat grown out of it, but we fought it for a couple of months. Hang in there!
