NWMR- Another Travel w/Kids ?

Since you all were so helpful with advice last time I posted about this, I thought I would ask some more questions! :-)

I'll be flying with both kids this summer with my mom and sister. I haven't flown since they introduced that xray machine that you have to stand still for in the security check point. Are they going to expect my 3 year old to sit still long enough to be scanned or are they going to let him walk through the metal detector? Also, if they do have both the xray machine and the metal detector and allow DS1 to walk through it, do you think they will keep our party together? The TSA website talks about always keeping the child and parents together, but I will be their only parent. Will they allow my mom to stay with us at the very least?

Second question- I EBF DS2. I do not plan on really being separated from him while I am there. Should I bring my breast pump just in case? I can't really see a need for it, but maybe there is a reason someone else could think of? I mean, i guess I could always pick up a manual pump while I am there if push comes to shove right?

Nope, you can walk thorugh the original one with the kiddos. I held DS through the XRAY machine, and I'm sure they'll just have your 3 year old walk through in front of you while you hold the younger one. You just stand in line, so if your sister or mom is with you right behind you that should work, just get in line together.

I have to say Houston Hobby was the most friendly and helpful airport I've ever gone through with DS. I'm sure there are others as well.  They don't want your kids getting lost any more than you do.

I have generally found TSA to be wonderful (surprisingly) when obviously pregnant or traveling with kids.  In every security lane I've gone through either PG or with kids (BOS, BWI, PVD, MCO, LAS, SFO, LAX), there has been a metal detector as well as a body scanner.  They waived me, DH, and kids over to the metal detector each time.  I don't think they would try to get a 3yo through a scanner, and certainly wouldn't ask you to go through with an infant.

If they don't see that your mom is traveling with you, just ask politely if you can keep your mom with you to help with your kids.

And if you're not planning on being apart from your baby, I wouldn't bring the breast pump.  Too much of a PITA with no gain.

As long as you're holding a kid you can go through the old detector. I'd just have your mom hold one of the kids so you don't even have to ask she stay with you

This is a great idea! I will have her hold DS2 while I take care of DS1.

Thank you all for your advice. Can you tell I am a tad stressed out about this trip!

I agree with this totally. TSA has been super when we have traveled with the kids most recently a few weeks ago. The family line for security is great b/c we haven't waited more than a few minutes to get to the security area! They can be accomodating and helpful when they want to.

  • I probably wouldn't bother taking your pump.  Last summer we vacationed when DS was 5months.  He would take a bottle of formula (altho he preferred BM).  So I did have bottles and formula so DH and I could go out on a date and leave him with the grandparents.  I didn't pump, just nursed when we got back.

  • They'll let you and kids and even DH go through the regular one.
