What do you do when

your LO will not go down for their last nap before bedtime?

Do you have them take a quick catnap later, even if it's only a couple hours before bedtime?  Or put them to bed earlier, even if it's an hour or more before their usual bedtime?

Just curious.  this happened yesterday with my DD and so I put her to bed an hour and a half early!  I was afraid she would wake up at 4 am ready to go for the day but instead she got up and ate like usual, then went back to bed til 7am. Thinking we just go lucky!

Re: What do you do when

  • I've always just let DS sleep when he's tired, and wake up when he's up. Some nights he's gone to bed before 5 pm, and if he's up before 5 am, then that's when we're up.

  • It varies. Benjamin is down at 6:30 usually. But lately he hasn't been taking his last nap which makes him super sleepy. So, we usually last until 5:30 and I'll take him for a 20 or 30 minute walk to keep him happy before coming home to take a bath and go to bed. The walk helps every time. If we stayed inside he would have a major meltdown and go to bed way earlier.

This. I won't keep them awake in the evening knowing they're tired. Sometimes that means an earlier bedtime or sometimes that means a crank baby in the evening. Same goes if they take a long nap... I could never wake them up from a nap just because evening is approaching and I don't want them to go to bed late. I feel like if a baby is tired I should let them sleep, even if it's not the schedule I want them to be on.

  • I follow the "she sleeps when she gets sleepy, and wakes up when she wakes up" most of the time too.  She usually goes down for a last nap between 4:30/5:00 and that's the one time I'll wake her up by 6 if she hasn't done it on her own yet.  Around 6 is when we eat, bathe her, and do the bedtime routine.  She usually goes down for the night around 7:30ish.

  • I try to put my baby down for bed close to the same time every night, around 8 pm. If he is due for nap and refuses it then I try and keep him up until bedtime. If he takes his last nap too late then sometimes he wakes up from the nap and won't go back down for bed at bedtime. I have occasionally taken him for a ride in the car when I know he really needs a nap and won't go down.

  • Our LO (6.5 months) is starting to "forget" to nap at daycare because there's too much going on so she'll want to nap at like 6 and her bed time is 7:30. We usually let her get about 30-45 minutes in and then change her into PJs and play til its bed time. Just long enough so she isn't cranky, but I don't want to put her to bed that early.

  • We are currently in a stage where LO is dropping his last nap, he will still occasionally take it but for the most part, he refuses that 6:00 nap.  On days that he doesnt take it, I move his bedtime from 9 to 8.
