Yeast Diaper Rash Remedies

We have been battling yeast diaper rashes for months. As soon as it seems to subside they're back again. It's very frustrating and I feel so horrible seeing poor boy's diaper area look so uncomfortable. We've been using the Nystatin cream over and over along with some oral Nystatin as well.

Anyone else deal with this? Any other suggested remedies or treatments?  I hate to continuously medicate the poor boy. I don't know what else to do.

Re: Yeast Diaper Rash Remedies

  • Diaper free time, jock itch cream under your diaper cream, and change diaper often.

My pedi gave us a powder to use in his diaper and that really helped along with diaper free time. Also, if you cloth diaper, be sure to rid the diapers of the yeast or youll keep reinfecting. We cloth diaper and had to use disposables until his rash was for sure gone.

  • Do you know what kind of powder?
  • Are you sure that's it's yeast?  If it's such a recurrent issue, I'd definitely get a pedi to take a look at it just to be sure.

I've noticed a correlation between some ugly weeping rashes and acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus if I don't change DD immediately when she has a BM

I've had success with using a mixture of antifungal and triple antibiotic creams for stubborn rashes (basically just squeeze out a ribbon of TAB and Antifungal ointment on your finger and rub it in 2X-3X daily).

I'd try some oral probiotics just to help improve the bacterial flora over long term.  Using coconut oil on the diaper area with every change when you are not applying medication also might help with providing some local protection and resistance.

As pp mentioned, naked time, sunshine and more frequent bathing of the nether regions (vs using wipes) should help.

  • Thanks!!  I have been researching the probiotics over night and think we are going to try that and an antifungal today. We've been to the pedi several times and that's her diagnosis each time.

As far as the nudity ;) he took that into his own hands this morning and promptly removed his diaper when he woke up!

  • The last time DD had a horrible rash, I mixed hydrocortisone cream and jock itch medicine in equal parts. It worked wonders.

When my DD had a yeast infection we used a generic cream for Lotromin and then Vaseline on top of that. Make sure to keep using the Lotormin for a few days after the rash clears up.
  • DS had a yeast rash that turned into a strep rash. The yeast stuff wouldn't go away so we took him back to the dr and she said it was strep. I had no idea strep could be a diaper rash. We used yeast infection cream, jock itch fungal cream and oral antibiotics and fed him a ton of yogurt. We also were prescribed oral supplements of "good bacteria." My brain isn't working and I can't remember the technical names of any of this stuff. It took a long while to clear up but it did eventually go away.
