Food Allergy

Question about milk allergies

DD was skin testing for 18 allergens a month or so ago and she is allergic (that we know of) to milk and peanuts. These both honestly REALLY stink since we're vegetarians. At the appt. he had mentioned doing an in-office trial for the milk since he said many allergic to milk can still handle baked in or cooked milk since it's partially broken down. Anyhow, we got the follow-up blood test results and the peanuts are very low, 2.something and he noted that it was very likely she would outgrow this. There was no comment on the milk other than that it was a severe reaction at 4.4 (ish- right around there). Does anyone have a LO with around the same number? Can they still handle baked in milk? I am going to call and ask, but was disappointed since it didn't say anything about a follow-up trial. Is this a high enough number that yours need strict avoidance?

DD  has never had any blood testing done, only skin testing.  We did do a milk challenge (boiled milk) around 15 months (can't remember exactly when) and she passed.   We had been giving her small amounts of food with baked in milk previously.  She had another skin test just after her 2nd birthday (and a major hive reaction to peanuts) and she barely reacted to milk.  She now gets greek yogurt in smoothies and I don't worry about baked in milk at all.  I've tried to offer cheese but she refuses it.  And she still drinks coconut milk.

I wouldn't rely on numbers as I've heard very mixed things about what these numbers actually mean. From what I've learned it is much more likely to grow out of a milk allergy, but most kids don't grow out of peanuts. But the best thing is to follow your allergist's advice.  And if you don't like his/her advice then look for a new one that you trust.

This. The number from the blood test doesn't correlate to the severity of the reaction, but rather the chance that your child will have some type of reaction.
