hives

Madison broke out in hives Wed afternoon. They come and go and its really bad after nap time and when she wakes up. The Dr said to give her benedryl if she seems itchy. Has anyone had to deal with this? How long did it last? I'm pretty certain its not related to food and she has no other symptoms. I feel so bad for her although they really don't seem to bother her much.

Re: hives

  • Hadley had really bad hives last September/October. It turned out that she had developed an allergy to her diapers and only cleared up once we switched brands.

It took us a long time to figure out that it was the diapers though. We did an elimination diet with her (which didn't work). The only time she was hive-free was with benedryl, but they would come back as soon as the medication wore off. We even took her to the doctor, she did a 5 day dose of prednisone ... and it wasn't until a friend mentioned something about trying a different brand of diaper that anything changed. We found that the only diapers she can wear are huggies pure & natural (all pampers and huggies snug & dry gave her hives). Huggies overnights are fine too, which is weird.

  • Hives were the first sign of DD's full on dairy allergy.  It went on for weeks; we thought it was strawberries.  They would come and go so we were trying to eliminate the random foods she might get, and never considered it was something she always got.  She was drinking about  a half gallon of milk a day.  We figured it out when she began having anaphylactic reactions and her lips would turn blue - scary.  The ped shifted us to a strict elimination diet and the first item was dairy.  After she hit that point even a tiny tiny bit of dairy would result in a reaction, but the build up was gradual.
