major sunscreen allergies please help!

I'm 23 weeks along and am having AWFUL reactions to every sunscreen I put on lately. I used to use Australian Gold spray gel but had to stop about a year or 2 ago b/c it was making my legs itch like crazy (only my legs). My husband still uses it and I've tried a couple times more recently when there was nothing else on hand and the reaction is much worse.

I switched to Hawaiian Tropic silk hydration and was doing great with that for a while but the past few weeks I've been getting the hives all over. Then the other day I used my friend's Neutrogena 70spf on my face and neck and now my chin and neck are covered in hives (I usually use Neutrogena 45 on my face and am fine but it was scalding hot that day and I'm more sensitive to the sun in general now so I thought the 70 would be a good idea).

I've tried a few others as well but it seems EVERYTHING gives me a rash and makes my skin itch and burn. Staying out of the sun or avoiding sunscreen altogether isn't practical for me as I live in Miami. Even if I am in the shade or the pool I will burn without it and it's wayyyy too hot for sleeves. I've been reading also about all these unsafe chemicals but they never say brand names and the only "safe" brand names I can find listed anywhere are nothing I've ever seen at the drugstore. Does anyone know of anything that might be more gentle on sensitive skin?

Look for active ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.  These are physical sunscreens.  Try skipping the chemical sunscreens.

  • I keep seeing things like that all over the internet and different chemicals to avoid. The problem is it's impossible to find actual sunscreen brands and with the large number of chemicals to avoid it's too hard to figure it out by reading labels b/c you can't keep all the names in your head when reading through a lengthy ingredients list.

Do you know of any sunscreens that are "physical suncreens"?  I need actual brands

I have very sensitive skin and I am allergic to zinc oxide... so I feel your pain.  I recently tried California Baby sun screen with good results... I ordered it online.

  • I have major problems with chemical sunblocks too and don't like using anything with parabens. The brands I like the most for me and the kiddos are Blue Lizard, ThinkBaby, and Kiss My Face. I tried Alba Botanica but had a very deep tan after I used it, so I don't think it protected very well. Physical sunscreens are usually more expensive than chemical ones but you can get a big bottle of the Blue Lizard on Am.azon for a good price.

Blue lizard baby - not regular. I've found good deals on babyganics at target and Harris teeter.
