Convertible car seat for a Mazda 3

DD was 25 inches at her 4 month appointment and her infant seat is only good until she is 30 inches, so I've started to look up convertible car seats.  Problem is I have a Mazda 3 which is very small, so I'm looking for a seat that will fit in the back and allow for driver & passenger to sit comfortably in the front (if possible).  Anyone have a convertible car seat and a Mazda 3 or another similar smaller sedan? TIA

Re: Convertible car seat for a Mazda 3

  • I'd go to car-seat.org and do a search by car model, year, etc and convertible or go over to the facebook group - carseats for the littles and ask there.  Lots of techs on both sites can give you answers that are accurate and also benifit your safety.

  • I don't have a small car, but if you can put baby in the center, the Diono radian might be slim enough to fit in between the seats. The cosco scerena is also very slim, and not as tall, so that could work too.

Combi cocorro is very cute and very small.

Chicco nextfit will last you a long time and it is pretty small front to back while rear facing.

I would try to go to BRU and try some out in your car.
  • Radian will need the angle adjuster in the Mazda 3, but good news is you can use it when lo has good head control, around 6 months or so (Diono changed from 1yr). Nextfit might be and option, and with a lo with those stats I'd skip the Cocoro. It won't last long rf. Guide 65 would work as well, but it doesn't fit lo's well until about 9m in onsie size.

We use the Britax Marathon (fully knowing that a lot of kids will outgrow it faster than most other car seats) in our MazdaSpeed3* and I have plenty of leg room when I sit in passenger seat.  FTR, I'm 5'10 and long-legged; so it works for us.  My father (who is 6'4) also seemed to fit fine in the passenger seat.

*the MS3 is a hatch; supposedly, both hatch vs sedan have the same legroom in the back but anecdotally I've heard the hatch has a bit more room.  The MS3 also has sculpted seats whereas the MZ3 may not.

  • The Chicco Nextfit has one of the highest height limitations (so long-lasting) and also one of the best profiles for smaller cars.  The 9 recline angles provide a lot of flexibility.  I use mine in my Jetta and in my boyfriend's VW Golf.  It really doesn't take up any more room than an infant car seat front to back.

I have a Mazda 3 as well.  We put DD1's Britax Boulevard in the middle rear facing and there was plenty of room to push the seats back.

Now that DD2 is on the way, I had to move DD1 to a side seat and have DD2's seat on the other side.  Now it is SUPER tight. :(
