Blood clotting disorder gene??

So I just found out my mother and brother tested positive for heterozygous Factor V Leiden. I started googling it and had to stop because I was freaking myself out!  I have no history of blood clotting issues, but apparently my grandmother and uncle have.  I am going in tomorrow to get tested for this and other clotting disorder gene markers.  Does anyone else have experience with this?  I am stressing out but trying not to :(

I have a blood clotting disorder but it is autoimmune not genetic. HiRisk board is your best bet! I have a friend with this genetic condition and she was on blood thinners just like I am! Hopefully you didn't inherit this! But if you did knowing is a very good thing!

I have Factor 5.  My sister and my father both have it as well.  My sister has had some issues with pregnancies (I won't get into that here because I don't want to freak you out - she has 2 healthy, happy kids).  I had a miscarriage before this pregnancy, but there is no indication that I miscarried because of the Factor 5.  (MY HCG numbers were low, low, low and I was spotting and miscarried at 5.5 weeks.)

I am on heparin injections twice a day throughout my pregnancy and a baby aspirin to combat the Factor 5.  This is an aggressive approach and we only took it because of my sisters issues.  I have at least 2 friends who also have F5 and had had successful pregnancies with only taking a Baby Aspirin.

Your doctor will be able to tell you if you have one marker or two markers and then discuss treatment.  Don't freak yourself out!  My baby was kicking the crap out of me today and has been HEALTHY my entire pregnancy.

This is def something you want to address but don't get yourself into a panic.  Healthy children are born to F5 positive women all the time!  I have 2 rowdy nephews to prove it!!

  • Thanks for the responses!  The genetic counselor said that at this point they will not put me on any blood thinners even if I have it since I have no history of clots.  I am hoping that I don't have it, but at least if I do they can be better prepared.  It's pretty scary, but I hope it all turns out well.

  • My sister has 2 clotting disorders, one genetic and one autoimmune. It caused her to lose 2 LOs in the past year due to clots forming in the umbilical cords. However, since she was diagnosed, she has been put on blood thinners and is currently 24wks pregnant with a healthy little girl. It has changed her course of treatment because of risks to the baby. She will have to be induced no later than a week before her due date if she doesn't go early. Her doctor also told her to think really hard before getting an epidural because the blood thinners greatly increase the risk of paralysis associated with an epidural. Its apparently manageable. Her OB and Hematologist keep a close eye on her, but everything is going well so far.
