Lost mucus plug

Hey everyone!
So this is my first pregnancy, 38 wks and 5 dys and I just lost my plug. Eww, it wasn't what I was expecting but mine was definitely bloody and gooey sorry TMI
Anyway, I've been awake since 3am with what I thought was my water breaking and contractions. It wasn't a big gush or anything that obvious but when I came back to bed I felt wet and I worried for a second but then brushed it off as I probably peed a little. I then of course couldn't sleep bc I was paranoid. Long story short, my short term disability isn't in effect until 6/1 so if I deliver 5/31 I get ZERO pay for being out of work.
I've had BH contractions all day, more than I ever had before and with me just losing my mucus plug I'm
scared this could be the start of labor.
I just starting timing the contractions and they are 10 mins apart only lasting 30 seconds but it hasn't been an hour yet and they are definitely bearable so I'm not freaking and running to the hospital any time soon.
In your experience should I not worry or do you think this could be the beginning?
Oh I'm 90 effaced and 1cm dilated.

Re: Lost mucus plug

  • Is this your first baby??  When I lost my plug with my first it was 6 days later that he was born.  My water broke.  I lost my plug today but have been cramping in the front and back all day.  I figure I am probably progressing, but I can handle the pain right now, so I'm not too concerned.  Now I hope I don't end up having this child at home, but I figure if things start getting super painful I will go to the hospital.

Best of luck to you!  I was 1-2cm and 70% effaced on Tuesday.  They estimated from growth U/S she was 7lbs 11oz

  • Yes, this is my first so I'm not sure what to expect. That makes me feel better though, thank you. I was nervous with having the contractions and just losing the plug that it meant it was beginning. I'm opposite from everyone else and want the baby to stayput for a little while longer. Haha

Good luck to you, it sounds like this are progressing for you as well.

Could mean hours, could mean days, could mean weeks.  Hard to know!

I would call your dr. Are you really concerned over losing one day of pay?
  • It's not 1 day, it's my full 6 weeks of maternity leave.
  • I lost large portions of my plug week ago. Im still completely pregnant. Rest and relax. Unfortunately if it is the start not much you can do to slow things down.

  • Thanks! I'm resting and being hopeful.
  • It really depends, it's different for everyone.

i lost my plug yesterday morning and had Graham this morning. With DD, I don't remember losing it at all.

  • This is my first as well so I can't offer personal experience, but I know my mom told me she lost her plug and her water never broke, they ended up having to induce her with both pregnancies, but one was 4 weeks after loosing her plug, the other 2 weeks....I know my OB said to call her office/nurse line (for after hours) when contractions were consistent and between 5 and 10 minutes apart (for a hr or so) and see what they advised as far as going to the hospital or waiting longer.....hope it helps!  And good luck getting through this last day!!
