Cleaning Up The Pubes

I always used Nair to keep things tidy, but it's been irritating my skin while pregnant. I'm scared to death to wax it, so my only option is shaving (unless you guys have a better idea??). So... it's been a long time since I put a razor down there (since 2002). I am scared to death I am going to cut myself, especially since I can't even see it.

Any tips for me? What kind of razor should I use? Is it better to use a 1 blade or multi-blade? I'm scared lol, but the hair needs to go. It's getting on my nerves.

I use clippers to keep it clean.

But I did just read good things about virgin coconut oil and shaving the bits, I couldn't tell you what kind of blade though.

  • I haven't found a single "women's" razor that works for me. I typically end up stealing DH's and putting a clean blade on, I think its a Mach 5, the vibrating kind. Seems to do the trick when I can manage it.

  • I have tried nair but it isn't working right. It's there a trick? I only know razor wax or nair.

  • I've never tried it bc I just saw it but yesterday in Walmart I saw a skinny razor made from noxema specifically for bikini areas. It looked like something I want to try!

That sounds like a good way to reduce cutting myself. You use just typical clippers, like what you would use on your head?

Sorry, I feel so silly asking this. I'm 25 and I don't know how to shave my pubic hair *hangs head in shame*

This exactly! I think their razors do such a better job. I also use a magnified mirror now that I cant really see but I use the one with a stand so my hands are free.

Put it on. Make sure it's a thick layer. You should barely see hair through it, if at all. I leave it on for 5-8 minutes, depending on how long it had been since I last used it. I know it's ready if it starts itching. Then I wipe it off with a towel (I prefer cold water). Take a shower to remove excess. Then you're smooth as the day you were born lol!

  • Get a trimmer! They make ones specific for this with guards on them so you cant cut yourself and they can still cut really close if you want.

Yup. a Peanut, actually. Either with no guard or a 1 or 2. I don't shave to be pretty, I shave because I can't stand being all poof down there, so it gets the job done. And when you get in the...meaty...area, I use a comb and run the clippers over the comb for extra no nick protection.

Get waxed. It's not that bad and 1x a month does the trick
  • I use a multi blade and at this point just pray I don't cut anything.. But good idea with the handheld mirror. I'm going to try that. I've shaved for 12 years I don't think I can ever not so its getting tough now that I can't see down there!

I am on the verge of tears when I get my eyebrows waxed. I can't imagine doing that to my pubic hair. It's a bigger, more sensitive space. I think the length of time would be agonizing torture.

  • I have the Schick razor with the clipper on the end (its green) and use that to keep things trim down there it has a guard and works awesome and then use a mirror to get the bikini line.
  • I have the Venus blade that I use and a mirror.

  • I use a Braun face shaver. It has a gaur and you can do it by feel not by looking. It stays nice and smooth for about a week and then slowly grows back. No razor burn or itching. I use it about every two weeks

  • I usually trim it really short w/ hair clippers, then, standing in front of the mirror, use a multi-blade, but just on the parts I can see in the mirror. I'm not about to slice off a chunk of my lady bits because I'm going in blind!

  • I've always used multiblade razors and men's razors always work best since the hair down there is coarse.

I've been using a mirror lately to shave everything away. Takes longer and is troublesome but so far no nicks or cuts!

    My baby is ONE!!

  • I use the razor with trimmer on it. I think it's the Schick Quattro. But that and a mirror have been working for me. Also I started using the new Nair Spa Clay and it works pretty good too. Like you, Nair typically didn't work and irritated but this has been good.

  • I think I'd stop the nair due to the chemicals in it. I use my husbands "man groomer". It's a clipper/trimmer that has an extendable handle. It cuts pretty short but no irritation or Knicks. Works for me.

This. I cannot imagine shaving at this point. Also, I broke out something terrible with nair.

So am I the only person on this board who doesn't shave bald? I shave bikini line and such to keep it clean and I trim it but not like super duper short. I feel like the odd (wo)man out, but I hate shaving and I am too broke for waxing. I get pissy when I have to shave my legs I don't need more to shave smooth.

Absolutely not, I'm the same way.  I keep everything closely trimmed but that's it.

Also, I use the Bikini Zone shave gel because I get really bad razor burn down there and that stuff is awesome for keeping that from happening!

I should say that I also hate shaving my legs, most of the year is spent with me looking like a yetti. I shave my arm pits regularly to keep the hubs happy. Lastly, since I can't see my lady bits anymore, I told DH that if he wants it hairless, he has to do it himself. He has shaved me once and hasn't spoken a word about it since, lol.

  • I get sugared, which is like waxing but less painful and irritating to me. I get smoother and the results last longer. I got every 6-8 weeks.

When I do have to shave, I used conditioner and my razor is the Venus Embrace. It has 5 blades and gets pretty smooth. Exfoliate beforehand and at this point use a mirror.

  • It's definitely a mission these days, but I use a multi blade razor with the little wire guards, a mirror and plenty of conditioner.

It takes a lot longer than it ever did, and I'm working by feel a lot of the time, but I just feel so much better when 'things' are in order.

  • First things first. You should never ever! Use nair down there. It could cause so much damage if you got some unintended places.

Second. Multi blade razors work best for a close shave. If your nervous about using the razor you can ask your partner or a good friend to do it for you.

Or you can use a mirror to see what your doing.

    Multi blade razor for sure.

I can't give any advice, as of this point in pregnancy I just do a blind sweep!

  • Thanks for all of the replies! I am going to try a trimmer/clippers first, because I feel I am less likely to cut myself. If I need to shave, a multi-blade and a mirror seem to be the way to go. I appreciate it!
