I know I am probably jumping the gun a bit on this one, but I am a natural born planner, so my mind is going crazy with all the things to get ready!
Anyone have advice on cloth diapering?
IE:
Like it, or dislike it?
What type of diapers do you like best?
What do you think is a good supply to start with?
Thanks girls!
P.S. Is it too early to be nesting?! lol!
Re: Anyone have advice on Cloth Diapering?
I have no advice but just wanted to let you know that there is a forum for CDing
https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/9544760/ShowForum.aspx (sorry if its not a clicky link)
this blog really helped me out:

This has some really good advice! Thanks for posting!
That would be great if you don't mind! I have been trying to look at the CD'ing board, but it is all a bit overwhelming!
Thank you!

What type of diapers do you like best? brands or styles? Theres so many different ones. I like all styles. I prefer one size diapers after the newborn stage and trimmer ones during the day.
What do you think is a good supply to start with? it depends in how often you want to wash. For newborns, 30 is recommended.
I cloth diaper my DS, and I'll do it again for this baby. It's been a really great choice for our family. Some advice:
1. Check out the CD board. There are lots of helpful ladies there with great ideas, advice, and suggestions. And the FAQ section is full of helpful info. Just don't ask them what "the best" CD is, because it's different for everyone.
2. Don't invest in a full stash of any one brand or type of diaper before you actually try them on your baby. What sounds great on paper doesn't always fit well in reality. I bought 6 or so each of a few different brands, then sold off the ones I didn't like and bought more of the ones that I did. There are also several stores that offer diaper trials and I've heard those work out very well.
3. Diapers advertised as "one size" rarely, if ever, fit a newborn. I didn't use CD's on DS until the OS diapers fit him, which was at about 3 weeks. For other babies it takes much longer for OS diapers to fit. I'm slowly investing in a stash of newborn sized diapers for this new LO.
4. Favorite brands for me have been Bumgenius, Rumparooz, and Blueberry.
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask!
I am really keen to do cloth diapers for so many reasons; no landfill, reusable, environmentally friendly and of course there's the ridiculous savings of several $1,000's!
And I agree, the Cloth Diapering thread is a bit overwhelming. I've only just gotten to know the pregnancy shortforms for everything - try reading some of those posts and it's all greek to me!
I CD, we love it. We started when she was 5 months old. I bought like 1 of a ton of a different kinds to try out. Different brands fit her better at different ages.
At this point in time (almost 2 years) I used Good.nights at night and naps, and regular GM or TT fitteds during the day. If we go out and she needs something waterproof on we use TotsBots.
Also do you CD mamas all use wetbags?
I love my wetbags.
I didn't CD in the hospital but my daughter never left my room for more than 5 minutes and DH was always with her. Also, a nurse never changed her diaper.
Them. They are easy, I stuff them after they are done drying, and use them just as disposable. They are pricey though, and not very newborn appropriate. I have newborn size diapers from various etsy sellers, ones with a snap down in the middle so they don't rub on the umbilical cord.
Sorry I am mobile so I will reply with some helpful websites when I pull out my laptop tonight!
I think it is just fantastic that you are considering cloth diapers already, way to be on top of it and informed! Insert smiles for you!
I didn't CD in the hospital. Right now I'm planning to use hospital-provided disposables and put LO in his/her first CD when we go home from the hospital. I'm sure that if you want to CD from day 1 you just have to make sure the staff is aware of your wishes.
I have 2 large hanging wet bags that I use in lieu of a diaper pail. A trash can with a washable pail liner works too. I have several other smaller wet bags for the diaper bag and also to keep in the bathroom next to the diaper sprayer.
Is he super frugal like my husband? I just threw out some numbers for him and he practically couldn't wait to start. You could save about $3000 if you CD your child from birth to potty. And that's just one child. Save even more when you buy CD's on sale. I've spent an average of $10/diaper. I've completed my stash for about $300. While initially that sounds like a lot, that's only a couple of months with disposables. Here's the website I got my info: https://www.momadvice.com/parenting/cloth_diapers.aspx . HTH! GL!
Like it, or dislike it? LOVE LOVE LOVE! Love that I never run out of diapers, love that my garbage isn't full of stinky diapers AND love how darn cute DS looks in all the different colours and prints.
What type of diapers do you like best? I most use the Bumgenius pockets, but I also have a few kawaii and happy heiny. I used prefolds with thirsties covers when DS was an infant.
What do you think is a good supply to start with? We had about 20 to start, I didn't want to go too crazy until I was sure it was something I could stick with.
We got into it slowly. For the first month we used mostly disposables and started introducing CD when we felt less overwhelmed by the whole newborn thing. DS is also a very heavy wetter so we still use disposables for overnight. Many CD mommas overstock so it can be very easy to buy second hand for cheap to build up your collection.
Hope this helps!
We began cloth diapering when DD was 6 weeks. We use the Flip system (covers and inserts). They are one-size-fits-most, which has proven true for us. I began with six covers and 20 inserts and had to do laundry every other day. Our current stash includes 12 covers and about 40 inserts. Flip makes wonderful, cost-effective diapers!! I highly recommend them.
We used cloth full-time until DD began daycare at 13 months, since our provider doesn't allow it. So since January, we've been using a combination of cloth and paper. The back and forth is annoying. It takes longer to accumulate a full load of laundry, which increases the stink-factor. Also, having paper laying around makes it too easy to use paper . . . because quite frankly, it is easier, especially when a poop is on the horizon. (Note: I NEVER would have said this as an exclusive cloth-diaperer).
That said, cloth is awesome! It's better for the environment, reduces the likelihood of rashes and blow-outs, and is cheaper. In addition to the diapers, a good diaper sprayer is necessary. (The sprayer attaches to the back of your toilet and allows you remove poopy residue before putting the diaper into your wet-bag.)
We CD DS and I love it. We had an initial investment of $88 for 24 newborn prefolds, snappis, covers, etc. Ben is superskinny and the prefold swamped him till almost 6 weeks, but then they worked till 7mths.
We switched to fuzzibuns which I loved for a while, then we used some grovias and I'm sold. They're fantastic.
I agree with PP about different diapers working better/being preferential at different ages.
A lot of companies have tester kits where you can get one of a bunch of different dipes to try and then you keep and pay for what you like and return the rest.
Just FYI, DS never once had a blowout in a CD. Even at 3 weeks old with runny EBF poo in OS diapers that were probably a little too big for him. One of the many benefits of CD's is they are much, much better at containing poop that disposables. Now, I don't know if that's true of the AI2 system that you mentioned (not having tried them myself - I'd imagine your shells would get soiled much more frequently) but prefolds, pockets, fitteds, etc all have a great reputation for keeping poop where it belongs.
Just popping in to say I love CD, we started with my youngest when she was a newb and havent looked back. We will also be CDing this one
Seems like there is a ton of advice already, so good luck!
I would recommend doing a CD trial prior to purchasing a bunch of diapers and equipment. Jillians Closet and a few other sites do a CD trial so you can try out different types and see what works right for you and baby. I wish I had done that. Instead I spent insane amounts of money on a newborn stash and a regular stash as well as CD safe detergents, a diaper sprayer, wetbags and inserts.
I prepped everything and then only used the NB stash for a week because DS hated cloth and got a rash (even though I changed him over 20x/day). So I went back to disposable and then tried cloth again when he was able to fit on the OS cloth. He again started getting rashes and the last straw was that I woke up from a nap to DH spraying a diaper over the toilet. He looked at me and said "I cannot do this anymore". I ended up selling everything at a huge loss.
I wish it had worked for us but it didn't, that is not to say it won't work for you. I know plenty of people that successfully use cloth from birth to PT'ing. Make sure that both partners are on board. There will be plenty of stuff to argue about post baby adding diaper arguments to the mix is just ridiculous IMO.
You could be right. A one-size system like Best Bottoms wouldn't fit a tiny baby for a while BUT you could get a pretty decent stash of newborn sized diapers (there are even some available for preemies) for what you would spend on a few months worth of disposables. And newborn CD's have great resale value when you're done with them. Just food for thought.
