Scraping membranes

Has anyone had it done before, does it work? When did the dr start doing it?

Re: Scraping membranes

  • i have had it done. my doctor wouldnt do it till 40weeks tho but it didnt work for me... but my friend had it done and her doctor did it at 37 weeks and she went into labor that night and had her the next day.. si guess it just depends on your body and if baby is ready..

  • My friend just had it done at 38 wks and went into labor the next night. Doc says with some women it doesn't do anything and some it does.. it just depends.
  • I've had it done with all three of mine I think in the 39th week. It didn't really do anything though.
  • Nope and I avoid it like hell. Sounds painful and from what I've read isn't terribly effective. Baby will come when they are ready.

This! I don't want anything going in there (except from DH)... it sounds terribly uncomfortable!

  • I had it done with both of my daughters and delivered them later that same day. I was 40 weeks with DD1 and dilated to 3 cm at my appointment and was having contractions on and off for days.

With DD2 I was 38 weeks and dilated to 4-5 cm at my appointment.

I think it depends on each person and if you are already making progress. I didn't find that it was that painful, honestly it was hardly different than an internal check.

  • If you're dilated, it won't hurt any worse than a regular cervical check. I was 38 weeks with ds and 3cm, 90% effaced. I had been contracting a lot. I had them stripped and had him the next night. I think your body has to be ready for it to really do anything at all.

  • I'm with Prim, I'd like to avoid it.  Doesn't sound all that pleasant.

My doc did it twice during my last pregnancy at 39 w (without asking or me knowing she was planning on it which ticked me off) and 40 w.  Besides causing some bleeding and discomfort, it didn't do anything and DD decided to come on her own at 41 w.  The actual stripping of the membranes didn't hurt at all though.

  • I had it done twice with DS, a few days apart right around my due date, and I don't think it really did anything-I had been dilated 3 cm for three weeks leading up to my due date and he still didn't come until four days after his due date when I had my doctor "induce" me by breaking my water (that did the trick, he was born only 6.5 hrs after my water was broken).

I had it done at 39 weeks.  A Thursday, my water broke the following Tuesday.

  • Nope, I wouldn't do it. I don't think it's even an option here. That said, my doctor doesn't do internal checks either.

  • I had it done a few times with DS1, starting at 39 weeks. It didn't really work for me. It was a little uncomfortable, but not too bad. I would have had it done for DS2, but my provider couldn't reach my cervix well enough to do it. My MW did it for DS3 when she started the induction process. I'd like to have it done this time, but I agree with PPs that LO has to be ready for it to work.

  • I had it done at 38 weeks with DD. I was at 2-3cm. Doctor said if it worked, I'd be in the hospital within a few days. It really didn't hurt, just a bit uncomfortable. I didn't go into labor until a week later at 39 weeks, so I don't think it did much for me. Though, I did start losing pieces of my mucus plug afterward.

  • Having your membranes stripped comes with its own risks and I have known women who have had their membranes broken on accident.

My OB swept me without permission at 37 weeks and I bled like a stuck pig plus it was painful.

I won't be having my membranes stripped unlesss I am over 41 weeks and on the brink of an induction.
