Fullness of kidney

Hi, have any of you had experience with fullness of left or right kidney on your babies ultrasound? My doctor just called and said he detected it on my ultrasound but I can't seem to find a clear definition of it. Thanks!

Re: Fullness of kidney

  • Did he maybe mean enlarged? We got called back after our anatomy scan to have a second one done with a fetal medicine specialist because his kidneys were slightly enlarged. The specialist said that this is common in boys because the vein that drains the urine isn't growing fast enough to keep up with the amount of urine he's producing. Sounds like a full kidney may be the same thing? He said that this is usually cleared up before birth and he wasn't worried. Wants to see me in 2 months for another follow up.

  • What term did the doctor use?  Did he call is a dilated kidney?  DS2 has a kidney issue so I'm always trying to help others with kidney problems.

He said fullness of left kidney. I will be going back for another ultrasound and after lo is born he will have one right away. He said its not uncommon but I am just trying to learn a little more about it. Can't seem to find a clear definition of google lol.
  • The only thing I can think that the kidney would be full of is urine..but I'm also not at all a medical expert.  In that case it's probably the same thing that my LO has that I described above.  Good luck!

  • My baby boy has the same thing. The doc says its more common in males. Usually in the left kidney... I went for my follow up ultrasound with a specialist. In most cases it corrects itself before birth. Or shortly after. Everything will be fine! The term for this condition is " pyelectasis" If you have any more questions I'd be happy to help as I have the same situation!

I was told the same thing. The doctor at the ultrasound told me I'd get another one at 37 weeks and not to worry as it is common in boys and usually clears itself up. I had a follow up with my OB and she basically said the same and not to worry about it at all.

I have to go back for a f/u US for "dilation to renal pelvis" which sounds like it may be the same or similer to what you're dealing with.  I don't know anything about it other than the research I've done says it's typically not a big issue.
