What would you have done (2 things)

1. DH and I were coming home from my mom's and we stopped to get gas. DH was pumping and a lady pulled up at the pump behind us. She came up to him and said:

" My daughter has been in an accident and they took her to soandso hospital and I have no gas to get to her, could you spare anything?"

Would you have given money? What would you have said if you didn't?

2. I was at a deli with DD, getting some sandwiches. A family of four came in...dad, mom, little boy (3ish) and baby girl (1ish). The little boy kept staring at my belly so I said, "It's a pretty big belly huh" and then I smiled. The mom gave me an evil look and shooed the kids away from me. Weird right? Did I step out of line by talking to her son?

  • I'd give 5 or 10 for gas, and you weren't out of line about the kid. That's pretty bizarre what the mother did.

1- I probably would have given the lady a few bucks for gas but nothing crazy.

2-I don't think you said anything wrong at all to that kid.  Maybe the mom is just scared her kid will start pointing out big bellies on people who aren't pregnant? IDK, that's the best argument for that lady that I can come up with.

Maybe she thought he offended me and her face just always looks like that?

  • DH and I have given 5 bucks if we have it on us before. The guy was on his phone talking about running out of gas. I know that's a common scam but I figure if they really need the help, great, if not, well, it sucks to give 5 bucks to someone dishonest but at the end of the day it doesn't break us so whatever.

As for #2, that's just weird.

  • #1 is a really common scam, and your DH got duped.

#2, I don't think you were out of line. I talk to little kids all the time at the store.

  • 1. I probably would not have given anything but that's because I'm skeptical.

    2. I find it odd that she shooed them away.

Hmm.  I don't make eye contact with people and make it pretty clear I am not conversing to you in line or at the pump.  So neither situation would happen.  It would have gotten shut down before it got to that point.

We weren't even facing her directions. She came up from behind and tapped him on the shoulder...he was totally caught off guard. I was glad I was in the car....I probably would have given her more.

  • 1.  I rarely have cash.

    2.  The mother's reaction was strange.

  • 1. Common scam - but depending on the person I may have fallen for it.

    2. Sounds like she over reacted.  Did she think you were talking about her belly?

No, she was super skinny. They looked like a family that would be on the cover of a magazine.

  • 1.  I would have given some money.  Maybe like $10.

    2.  I would have ignored the kids or just said, "hello".  But I also think the mom overreacted.  Maybe she didn't hear you right.

  • Would not have given money. We've been approached 3 times with similar son stories. We gave once, then saw the guy asking for more money from someone else after we have him more than enough to reach the location of his "emergency".
Ignore her. She was a stranger. A weird one.

I would have paid for the gas but not given money.

  • 1. I'd would have given the woman and dirty look and ignored her. She can go scam someone else.

    2. Why do people get so weird about their kids being talked to?

  • 1. I probably would have given them a little money if I had some on me.

    2. I don't think you were out of line with the kid.  I think the mom's response was odd.

  • 1. In the past, I'd have considered paying for like, $10 on her pump. Now I'm broke and would maybe have given her a dollar. Maybe.

    2. Maybe the mom thought you ATE the baby in your belly? Really, it sounds weird as ***.

Me too!  I could never relate to the "people say the rudest things to pregnant women" posts.  People never approached me when I was pregnant.

Maybe I have bitchy resting face.
