FTM advice from a FTM

Not that I am full of knowledge but I just wanted to put out there the two pieces of good advice I have recieced recently!

1st maternity spandex shorts are amazing. I have been living in dresses and they are awesome underneath because they make me feel more in control of the bottom region and also my legs don't rub together when walking!

2nd wait to buy a nursing bra if you plan on breast feeding. I was going to buy one this week but I had a breast feeding class on tuesday that suggested waiting to buy one until your milk comes in 3 to 5 days after birth. You will have a growth spurt at 36 weeks and then again when your milk comes in so waiting will give you a more accurate size. Also they suggested buying a size where you are already on the last latch so you can shrink with it as you loose pregnancy weight!

These were both very helpful pieces of info for me so I thought I would pass it along!

1 - where did you get your maternity spandex shorts?  I've been having the hardest time finding ones that don't ride up.

2 - I disagree.  I was told this same thing at a nursing class before DD1 came.  But when I went to the breastfeeding store, they said to absolutely get them when you're 9 months pregnant.

  • 1. These sound amazing and I want some!

    2. Have to disagree too. Only half of all women lose weight during BFing. I wouldn't plan on it.

See I was thinking this to because mainly I like to be prepared but what she said made sense but you have first hand experience so I'm going with your advice!! Did you still fit it after your milk came in?? This whole breast feeding thing is making me feel overwhelmed!

The shorts I got off a rack at Moherhood maternity in Topeka KS ... I have yet to find the same style online unfortunately!

Yes, even when my milk came in, my boobs never got bigger than when I was 9 months pregnant anyway.  I think my boobs stopped growing around 7-8 months.  (I'm hoping they stop soon they're outta control!  So for me, that wasn't an issue.

My friends recommended I wait and I'm glad I did. There's no way one purchased at 9 months pregnant would have fit me PP. I lost a TON of weight in the first 3 weeks. Anything purchased while pregnant would have been way too big for me.

I've also had friends whose breasts practically doubled in size once their milk came in.

ETA: OP, I'd get a couple of nursing tanks to get you through the first few weeks and put off buying a bra as long as you can. No one can predict what your body is going to do once you give birth and your milk comes in.

I ended up buying one bra at 2 weeks PP but waited until close to 2 months PP to stock up on them.

  • Ok so everyone is different haha ... Makes sense and also makes planning difficult! ... My boobs have hardly changed to this point so I was thinking ok well then at 36 weeks and after my milk comes in they will be different?? A wait and see game I suppose! I borrowed like 10 of those nursing tanks from a friend and already love them! Thanks for the advice!
  • With my daughter my breast had NO size change until 3 days postpartum when my milk came in. If I had bought a bra before then it would not have fit. I went up 2 sizes. This time, my breast have increased 1 size. I anticipate this growth will continue, so I am going to wait to buy bras again after the birth.

  • 2. there is no perfect answer to this one. Waiting until your milk comes in and your supply has regulated is not an option for everyone. For some they can get away with a loose sports/sleep bra, or nursing tanks until they get a nursing bra. If your large chested you can't just walk around like that for a month PP. I 100% plan on buying one nursing bra a couple of weeks before my due date and then I will buy again once everything has settled. My size may change a lot, but I absolutely can not go without a bra for  3 weeks!

Well heck no I could not either I will just wear my current bras and then get a nursing bra when I need to.
  • unless we had people over, I pretty much walked around the house topless the first few weeks. When people were over, I had on a loose sports bra. I didn't start wearing my nursing bra until he was about 2 weeks old.

  • The thing about nursing bras is interesting.

For my first pregnancy, I was afraid to go ahead and buy nursing bras because I was afraid they wouldn't fit after my milk came in. What I didn't realize was that, as someone BF for over a year, my breasts would get huge when my milk came in. DD. After my supply regulated, I went down to a D, or where I am at while pregnant. After baby starts eating solids, I slowly start going down again to a C. Once I finish weaning, I end up at a B. Ironically, before my first pregnancy I was a C, and now non pregnant I am a B.

The point is, any nursing bra that you buy now will not go to waste. You will probably cycle through several sizes on your BF journey. So dont be too nervous about it.

Oh! You do loose weight quickly while BF... Except about 10lbs. You can exercise, diet, etc to loose it, but it just doesn't go away until you stop BF. Then you loose it in a week. Well, for the majority of women I know, anyway.
