Question

Hi ladies! Just wanted to ask if any of you have experienced this. I've noticed that it's near impossible for me to sleep on my back now becauase I feel like I'm suffocating. I began noticing this about a week ago, and I'm 11 weeks today. I had read somewhere that it's better to sleep on your side beginning in the second trimester, so I've been trying to get in the habit of that, but if I accidentally roll over on my back I wake up and can barely breathe.

It's like there's something sitting on my chest, and if I roll over on my side and take a couple deep breaths it gets better. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this. I have had anxiety attacks in the past and was on 10mg Lexapro for them. I weaned myself off of the medication right after I found out I was pregnant. Not sure if that could have something to do with it. Thanks!

Re: Question

  • I don't have this, but it sounds like a body pillow would be a good investment for you. Hope that helps.

  • I have pretty much the opposite problem...I sleep on my back or my stomach naturally. Training myself to sleep on my left side (or ANY side) is not going well at all. :-S

  • I get short of breathe now weather I'm lying down or sitting up. I get this fullness in my belly that seems as if it overflows to my chest. I am trying myself to get in the habit of sleeping on my side but it all in uncomfortable now. I'm 10 weeks. Hope it gets better for you.
  • I'm normally a back sleeper, so I've been training myself to sleep on my side.  It's not going so well.  I've been thinking of getting a body pillow to help.  That might help you.  I had a friend who said she took an old pillow, cut it in half long ways, and then sewed it back together.  So, if you're handy with a sewing machine, this would be a very cost efficient option.  I'm probably going to do that this weekend, myself!

  • Is it possible that you are experiencing sleep apnea?  I was on antidepressants for a long time and I actually developed sleep apnea after I stopped taking them the first time. I could feel myself gasping for air and it would startle me awake sometimes. It was really scary. It is definitely worse when you sleep on your back. If it continues you can talk to your doctor about it and they will do a sleep study. For me it seems to have subsided once I was off the meds completely.

For me it's the opposite.  Sleeping on my stomach makes my nausea feel so much better for some reason.
