cutting nails

OK you would think by this time I would have mastered cutting DS's nails but nope I haven't!  He moves around so much.  I am not the greatest with the nail clippers & his nails always looked a mess....Uneven & his toe nails have little cracks in them.  What's your technique?

    I use cuticle clippers.

  • I am in the same boat as you, LO hates getting his nails cut. I just try a different distracter each time. I try and let him hold something in his other hand. Sorry I am not more help.

Toes I can do in his sleep. Hands, I have to wrestle him. I did it this morning without him losing it. I put him on my lap and put his legs between my legs so I can lock him in. I give him a toy to hold in one hand (his new thing is Rubber Duckies) and I hold the other hand and I clip the nails. It takes him a minute to get the toy out of his other hand. I just clip the nails because I need to be fast, then when he's done freaking out I take the hand back and tear the nail off. Then I give him a minute and do it again.

  • Wrestling moves...that's about all that works for me!  My kiddo is so strong, even the nurse commented on how strong he is when she was trying to give him shots.  I almost have to put him in a full body/head lock and hold onto his hands and feet as tight as I can.  It's not pretty, but it has to be done.

  • DD hates the clippers so I bite them. She LAUGHS so loud when I do it. Maybe give that a try if it doesn't gross you out?

  • I still use the little scissors. The baby nail clippers that came in my kit are worthless. So clunky. No way I can get around with those...

and I still haven't figured out howto cut her toe nails. Hr toes are so tiny!! And the nails even tinier! I can't do it! This is why she typically has what looks like a french pedicure. I sit on her to cut them but still can't do good enough job. Hands are better. She now sometimes sits still enough for me to cut those...

  • I clip LO's toenails while he is sitting in his high chair. He can still wiggle but it does confine him somewhat. As far as fingernails.... it is always a struggle. I usually take him out on the porch because he loves to be outside. I call our dog onto the porch and sometimes it is enough of a distraction to get a few done without a fight! lol

Whenever i find myself in a snuggly time with DS I send DH to get the clippers. Cutting nails works great for us when he's drowsy and a little floppy
  • I didn't read the other posts yet but we do pretty much everything possible outside.  DS LOVES to be outside so I give him his meds (he is on antibiotic for ear infection right now) outside and we clip his nails sitting outside watching cars go by.  It works great and he is somewhat distracted.  I might clip one hand then let him play a bit then do the other one.  When he was small we would wait until he was asleep and then clip them!  We did this when I still rocked him so we would do it in the garage so there weren't nail clippings everywhere.
