Nurseries and Baby Gear

out of practice.........bumpers or no bumpers......what are u buying for bedding?

My DS is 4 1/2 and i am pregnant with a girl due in october. Things have changed since last time i did a nursery. it seems that now no one is using bumpers anymore which seems to make buying a comforter set worthless since u don't use the comforter or the bumper.  Plus the bumpers make the set a lot of the time. So do I just buy sheets and crib skirt and work from there?

Re: out of practice.........bumpers or no bumpers......what are u buying for bedding?

  • I got an inexpensive bedding set, put the crib skirt and sheet on the bed, the comforter on the wall as a wall hanging, and cut up the bumper to make a window valance.

And at 9 months, I went out and bought a breathable bumper because DS kept getting his legs stuck between the crib slats.

  • We did not buy a bedding set, the only thing that should be in the crib is a fitted sheet.  We did buy the breathable bumpers.

  • All I bought were a couple sheets. In 13 mos we have never missed the bumper. I'm glad I didn't buy a breathable one up front.

  • We bought the sheets only (if you like the bumper look you can get the https://www.skiphop.com/category/completesheetcollections.html which I think are ADORABLE but were over priced for me :)

We got the breatheable bumpers at a garage sale for super cheap - and recently put them in as she was tossing her binky out..

I then did end up buying a cheap bumper on consignment to put over the top of our crib when she starts pulling up and teething (spent under $5) (I'll tie it over the top so it kind of acts like a cover)

No bumpers.  I bought a comforter set with the sheet and crib skirt.  The comforter is hanging in the nursery for decoration (same as a PP) .  I was only going to do the sheets and crib skirt, but fell in love with a set from PBK and couldn't resist.

  • Bumpers, blankets and pillows are not advised for cribs, so it does render those cute coordinated sets kind of useless.  A lot of people still use the comforter for tummy time and some place the bumpers on the outside of the crib slats.

Personally I bought a few solid and patterned crib sheets and made a trendy chevron crib skirt myself.  Practical and inexpensive.  I tried the breathable bumper alternative, but wasn't happy with the fit and the look, so I returned it.

I was going to say the same thing only I may just drape the quilt on the rocker so I can still get some use out of it.  I could either pay $40 for the sheet and skirt that didn't really match that well or $70 for an entire set that I fell in love with.
