Secondary IF

Newbie

I'm new here have lurked a few times I will try to do a brief intro. We were diagnosed with male factor IF a few years ago. We were young so decided to wait to do anything. Then we got pregnant with DS now 15 months. Then a week after his 1st bday we found out we were pregnant again! We were told we hit the powerball twice and not to rely on it happening again. Well we lost the second baby at 12 weeks. Now that I lost the baby I have a huge itch to get pregnant again soon! DH thinks we should wait and see if we hit another powerball since we are young 27 but I have this urgency.

So my first question is how does everyone pay for IVF. We are middle class but the 20k price tag seems so in obtainable. Also, knowing our brief history would you wait or get started soon so if it takes awhile to work we have time. TIA!

PS: I only have one ovary so not a huge deal but a slight hit against me as well.

Re: Newbie

  • Welcome. I would say talk to your OB about testing or seeing a RE. There are other opinions that are much less expensive that may work for you. It sounds like you need testing before jumping into IVF. Good luck!

  • I agree, get a referal for an RE and get some tests done on both of you. Then go from there.

    Best of luck

  • Ditto - sounds like you might be able to try less expensive options before jumping into IVF.  Good luck!

    Welcome!

I'm new(ish) here, too, and I'm about your age (28), but I have other issues that are preventing me from becoming pregnant. I agree with pp that you should be tested first and discuss your options/chances with your RE.

I asked my RE from a financial standpoint what she would recommend and in her diplomatic way she said that 3 injectible IUIs equals essentially one IVF and my IVF chances (age and diagnosis considered) are 50-75% (Whereas IUI 18-20%). She let me come to my own conclusion. :)

Ultimately DH and I are not ready to start IVF yet, so we are going the IUI route and feel comfortable with that for now. If after 3 cycles it doesn't pan out, we will consider IVF next summer and give ourselves a buffer to save up since we are out of pocket.

      Good luck!!

Sorry I forgot to mention we have met with RE. She said we could do IUI with donor sperm but if we wanted to use DH's we would have to do IVF. DH's count and motility is pretty bad. When I said we hit the powerball I was not exaggerating!
  • Welcome. Sorry you have to be here and sorry for your loss.

I'm currently going through IVF and we're fortunately enough to have insurance cover some expenses (about 50%).  Everything else we've dipped into our savings to pay.

  • Have you talked to your RE about going to visit a urologist?  We were your age when we went through IF the 1st time.  After a few uninformed doctors, we finally got recommended to an RE, who passed us along to an urologist.  Find one that specializes in male infertility.  There are a few things they can look at and possible recommend that may help with your SA numbers.

We did that and DH had a minor surgery and was prescribed clomid and we finally, after 3 years, conceived DD.  Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do to help us this time around, and we are trying IUI.

    Best of luck.
