Our top girl name choice is Esther. Its a family name for me and my partner and it's our favorite by a LOT.
I asked for feedback on the name board and a few people brought up the horror movie Orphan, which I didn't know about. It's about a family that adopts a girl named Esther and she ends up being a psycho killer. The tag line is There's something wrong with Esther.
I feel like this is a bad enough association with the name that we should reconsider. The people I've talked to think it's fine but I don't think that they get the extra layer of complexity that a horrible anti adoption association brings.
Thoughts?
Re: Name dilemma
I have to agree with this too!
Let's put it this way: my nephew is named after a character in Pet Sematary 2. I doubt most people know that. And there will *always* be someone who finds a problem with a name.
Stick with Esther. I like it
If you like it, go with it. You are the ones who have to live with it not your neighbors, your friends, or strangers. Well, maybe they do but it shouldn't interfere with their lives.
I don't think that's a fair thing to say. I used to be very active on that board, and while they are very honest, they do not attack. People aren't honest to hurt feelings, or for entertainment, they are on that board to give their opinion. Not to say "that's wonderful!" to every name suggested, as that would make for a very boring board.
A lot of us take names and the history of names more serious than others. There is definetly a general concesus on the board as far taste (no made up names, misspellings are never a good idea...) but it doesn't come from a bad place. I'm sorry you were sensitive to their feedback, but the women there are also very very very helpful and I have seen lots of great advice.
I'll be the odd-one-out and say that I wouldn't name an adopted child Esther...I am incredibly neurotic about things like that though.
But, the name doesn't have a special meaning for me either. Maybe if it did, I would be able to get over it. Like a lot of people mentioned...it wasn't a big movie, so most people probably wouldn't make the connection.
