Eggs and kids

I need opinions.

Cholesterol and all that..I know it should be limited in adults.
How closely should that be "watched" in a child?

My daughter has never really liked eggs.  All of a sudden, she's really into them. I made eggs for breakfast, and she wanted some of mine.. she liked it, so asked for her own.  Then she says "can I have scrambled eggs for lunch too? And dinner?"  I imagine 3 eggs are a bit overboard.  But I told her I'd make her another for lunch.

Do you watch cholesterol in your child? Do you limit their eggs?

Re: Eggs and kids

  • DD can eat as many eggs as she wants. She loves them, we actually all do.

    Ditto.

Eggs = healthy fat.  I don't worry about healthy fats or the cholesterol in eggs.  For any of us.  Actually, I thought that "they" (i.e. mainstream nutrition people) have decided that the cholesterol/fat in eggs isn't something to worry about anymore.  At least for today ;)

  • Maybe you could do egg whites instead?  Or 1 whole egg and one egg white?  My little guy can eat 2-3 eggs scrabbled at a time.  We do a lot of eggs.  In all honestly, I've never worried about cholesterol.  Does it run high in your family?

  • In a healthy body, the body will only make cholesterol if it's lacking. If you eat cholesterol, then your body knows not to produce it. The question of how much to put into your body comes into play and I don't know the answer for a child. My suggestion would be one whole egg and one egg yolk since 99% of the cholesterol is in the yolk, and limit it to one time per day.
  • I actually know that saturated fats can impact cholesterol more than actual cholesterol can, so my husband and I don't really worry about eggs either.  He has at least a dozen a week, I probably have eggs every other day.

I just wasn't sure if you should keep an eye on that with kids, and if 2-3 eggs a DAY were a little much.

    I love eggs.

This is how I feel.  Unless you've specifically been told to watch your cholesterol I wouldn't limit your/her eggs.  I eat an egg for breakfast every day fwiw.

Nope it doesn't! None of us have high cholesterol.  Ok, my mom does.. but that's based on a crappy diet.  We eat healthy in our home (for the most part) and our numbers are good.  I've never worried about it, just got to thinking a little on it when she asked for 3 of them.  But I could try an egg white and see if she likes that, too :)

  • I read an article a while back on eggs and now I can't find it.  Grrr.  It was really informative.  If I can find it I'll page you.

  • Yep, eggs are healthy.  Our pedi told us to give them to DD if she would eat them because she won't eat other meat.  Today she had them scrambled with spinach, green pepper, chives and a little ham.  I have a crazy kid :)
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • Ok, sounds like I shouldn't worry much about it.  I'm thrilled she ate one, she doesn't eat much meat so I know the protein is great.

LO loves scrambled eggs. I'm totally adding peppers tomorrow. Great idea on the veggies! Can't believe I didn't think of that!
