BDTD moms: stomach muscles

Ok, I've been around a while and haven't seen this one addressed yet:

Has anyone here had separated stomach muscles?  If so, can you tell while you're still pregnant or only after baby gets here?

My stomach is killing me. But I can't tell if it might be separating muscles or if baby is just sticking a limb in me and bruising me internally.  It's probably the latter, but just thought I'd ask before I go consult Dr Google.

If this baby sticks in there to 41 weeks like its older sister, it's gonna be in so much trouble!  :)

  • I hope for your sake your muscles aren't separating:)  It sounds painful...I wonder, is there any way to avoid it from happening?

Diastasis Recti- I have it. I was much bigger with my first pg and my abs were fine but for some reason they are separating with this LO. Starting from my belly button and going up through my abdominals is extremely sore and sensitive. My OB says they may  go back together and they may not. In some extreme cases surgery is required. She said at this point all that can be done is to just minimize the damage and not over exert myself- yea right I have a 4 year old to chase after. I have found that supporting my belly helps especially by the end of the day. I bought a maternity belt which made my belly feel like it was in a vice grip and hurt worse. I broke out my belly bands and have been wearing those under clothing that doesn't have the full tummy panel and I've gotten some relief from that.

My abs were strong before I got pg because I'm a pilates freak. but I believe it's like stretch marks.... if you're going to get it you're just going to get it.

Thanks, this was really helpful.  I am going to have my midwife check me at my appt next week, as I'm not sure if I'm just psyching myself out right now.  I have a tender spot right above my belly button, and when I use my abs to sit up, my stomach gets weirdly distended in the middle. I thought at first it was just the baby, but it (the baby) tends to stay at the sides, so now I'm a little freaked out.

I'm hoping I'm just getting myself worked up over nothing. It wouldn't be the first time.... :)

With DD my muscles separated around 22 weeks.  I noticed it when I was relaxing by the pool on our baby moon and I got up and my stomach "peaked" into a mountain with a pointy middle.

My muscles separated on both sides.  Its more common to separate down the middle, which I'm not sure what that might look like.  They never repaired themselves unfortunately, but hoping I can figure something out to help this time.

I just read an article about the Dia Method (you can google) which is supposed to help with this.

Mine have been separating pretty painfully... Around 29 weeks I had this awful stabbing pain when I stand up, when the baby pushed her butt out in certain places, which she did ALL.THE.TIME. My belly just felt awful for a week. Standing up would take my breath away. I couldn't for the life of me stand up perfectly straight because it hurt so much, so I'd walk around hunched over which made my back hurt...! I ended up going to the Dr to make sure it wasn't something bad, and they said diastasis recti. I want to reassure you that the constant agony only lasted about a week, and then sometimes I'll get a bit tender again but not too bad. I thought I was going to lose my mind if I had to deal with that for ten weeks! But its gotten a lot better. A maternity support belt helps, though they're uncomfortable. Since my pain is now pretty inconsistent I keep it in my purse for when I need it. If you hold the sides of your belly in a little bit with your hands, does it feel better? Definitely try manually holding your belly muscles together when you sneeze or standup and see if it helps. If holding your belly together and up help, a support belt probably will help.

Thanks!  Do you have recommendations on a support belt?  We don't seem to have as many of the resources in Canada that you do in the US, so things like this can be really hard to find... Our local 'urban centre' only has one Thyme Maternity, and some big box stores (Walmart, Sears, Hudson's Bay).  It can be frustrating when trying to find these specialty items... :S
