1st Trimester

DHA Supplement?

I saw some posts about this.... what is it? Should I be taking it?

I'm 5 wks and not seeing my OB until 11 wks (grrrrrrr... I'm actually going to call Monday and try to move it up til at least week 9)

When I spoke to my OB over the phone all she said was take a prenatal that has at least 800mcg folic acid... I've been taking for the last 7 months anyway.

Should I wait? What is it? Did your OB suggest you take it?

Thanks for any information!

Re: DHA Supplement?

  • It has Omega-3 (fish oil). I've been taking an OTC pnv 2 months before we conceived. I've been taking Expecta (the DHA supplement) in addition, since the summer. It helps with brain development.

  • Thanks... I guess this is something new? Never heard of it before. I've taken fish oil before but stopped because it would make me burp, taste like fish and then made me want to vomit.

Does Expecta have that same effect?

  • No. Just be sure not to bite into it. It's red and transparent (you can see the oil inside). I buy mine at CVS- comes in a 30-day supply. Also the package contains a coupon inside for $2.00 off.

  • I take the brand One A Day prenatals

its actually 2 bottles in a pack one bottle is a regular prenatal vitamin with all the usual good stuff and the other bottle is DHA geltab pill. So ive been taking that for a while. Ive always thought you're supposed to take DHA so if you go for One A Day brand they are together in one box...its about 14 bucks a month.

  • I believe that DHA is needed in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters more so - and during nursing.

Expecta is made from algae, not fish, so don't worry about fish burps.

  • I started taking the Expectra DHA supplement right after I found out I was pregnant.  My RE said that it's a good way to get the omega-3 fish oils without having to worry about mercury levels in fish.  It's also a good idea to keep taking it if you breastfeed. If you go to enfamil.com, you can get a certificate for a free trial of it from your OB.
  • DHA is very important during pregnancy, although more important in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters than the 1st.  Before I went to my doctor and got prescription prenatals (which have DHA in them), I went to Target and bought Expecta -- which is an over the counter DHA supplement.

Also, my doctor thinks you need at least 1000 mcg of folic acid, not 800, just fyi (all doctors are different, just thought I'd let you know).
