Teachers Leaving Daycare

Do you give your DC an end of the year gift? I will be done with work on a Thursday and DC provider will be taking Friday off, for everyone not just my DD. Technically I don't need to pay her for Friday since its one of her vacation days. I was thinking of getting her a small gift card but now that I know she is taking a vacation day I was thinking about just paying her for the full week. Is that lame?

I don't know if it makes a difference, but we won't be returning there in the fall.

Re: Teachers Leaving Daycare

  • I left our sitter when DD had just turned 2 because I was going on maternity leave and then she was going to daycare.  She had been there since 6 months, except for the summer when I was off.  I gave her an edible arrangement to let her know we appreciated what she had done.  If I was going back to her I wouldn't have given anything.  Does she know you're not coming back?  If so I think at least a thank you note would be nice.

  • I have to pay for daycare in the summer so I plan on taking him to daycare 2 times a week in order to keep him in the groove of going there and to get prepped for class next year.

If you're not coming back, I agree with pp.  Give her a thank you note and I love the idea of an edible arrangement.

  • Ive told her that we are considering other options but I'm being a wuss about outright telling her we aren't coming back with DD still there. Not that I feel like she is unsafe.

I like the edible arrangements idea too. I actually learned how to make them so maybe I will make one for her. Would you still pay her for the whole week or just the time that we are contractually obligated to pay her for?

If you're not going back to her then you should definitely give a gift. I think that's better than an extra day of pay. If she doesn't know yet then maybe a thank you note and small gift card for Starbucks or somewhere for now and then send an edible arrangement when you officially cancel for next year.

  • I was planning on telling her on the last day. She already knows when our last day for the summer is and has a replacement lined up. She just asked about the fall and I put it off for now because I think it will lead to a discussion of why we are leaving and I don't want my daughter to be impacted.

Basically, she's a nice lady but the kids watch more tv than I was told they do and I would like DD to be in a setting that offers more learning experiences. Right now they play inside with the few toys she has and the tv is on or play outside in the sand.
