baby nails...

What are you mamas doing about baby's nails? Alessandra is 2 weeks 1 day and im still really nervous about clipping her nails. DH and I tried but both got scared that we'll clip her skin, her nails are so soft!

Our pedi said that some moms bite their baby's nails because they are to scared of clipping.

We've kept her in mittens because she goes straight for her face when her little fingers are free but I dont want to constantly keep her in mittens. I feel like shes so relieved when they are off.

Any suggestions or tips?

Re: baby nails...

  • My doc said just to file them. They were soft so I actually kind of scraped the ends off with my nail and then filed them smooth.

  • I just use a really soft nail file and gently file in one direction while she is sleeping.

I cut them with clippers while he's eating or sleeping. The hard part comes when they realize what you're doing and get mad (when they're a little older)!

  • My MIL bought us a little scissors thats made to cut their nails and it also has a little file with it. I use that when im feeding. Biting or peeling them works well too
  • I clip them when he's asleep. Going on 4 weeks now and so far so good.

  • With DS1 I filed them when he was a newborn. With DS2 he's not even a week old and I've all ready clipped them haha you aren't as nervous with number 2! I was just super careful.

I was told to file them for the first while because if you clip them you can catch the skin underneath easily.

I have been doing DS's nails every few days it seems they grow so fast.

  • File works great! It's not scary like clippers. My MIL would bite off her kids nails! Whatever work, right

My husband cuts those little nails with scissors while I feed the baby or when he is asleep. Seems like LO doesn't mind.
