Camping with a 3mo?

Need some other mommies to tell me if we're crazy for considering tent camping with our 3 month old son. We're headed to an event and to see family for a weekend in July. Camping would be right by the ocean, average lows of 50 at night. Obviously it won't be a walk in the park since he's not even sitting up or sleeping thru the night, but it's so much cheaper to camp, so we're considering it. Thoughts?

  • We are going  camping for July 4th on the ocean and Tucker will be just over three months. I think that if you are prepared it will be fine, we are planning on bring enough warm stuff and an easy up for shade. Hope you have a great time, I think starting children young to love/spend time in the outdoors is great. Enjoy

  • We just of back a couple days ago from camping with our 6 week old. We just bought a camper a few days before so we didn't tent camp. But it went 100% better than we expected! DD really seemed calm esp with her 6 week growth spurt!!!! GL!
  • I dont think your crazy at all! We are planning multiple camping trips with our son this summer, the first being either this weekend when he is 8 weeks old or next month when he is 3 mon. As long as you bring all the essentials it should be no problem.

  • We just camped this weeked with our 5 week old.  It was in the 30's at night so we were very thankful that we had a camper with heat.  Our son slept amazing (6 hour stretches).  It wasn't a walk in the park but it was very doable and we can't wait to go again.
  • We'll be camping in a tent with LO in northern British Columbia at the beginning of July when he is just 3 months old and near our home in mid eastern Saskatchewan when he is just 4 months old. I'm a little bit concerned about the temperature in northern BC as the last time we camped there it got quite chilly at night but we plan to bundle LO up really well.

We will be taking the playard with us and looooots of boiled water. We'll leave it outdoors in the shade during the day and probably in our van at night so it stays at a nice temperature. Otherwise we plan to take a good variety of warm and cool clothing, tons of receiving blankets, baby blankets, our playmat, some toys, stroller, and our carriers.

I'm thinking that washing bottles is going to be a bit more difficult so I think we'll take all the bottles we have. We only use a small number of the same bottles and wash them a few times a day. LO will take others though, we just don't like them as much. For camping we'll probably take every bottle we have so that we don't have to wash them as often. Or...maybe we'll get some Playtex Nursers with drop ins. Hmm...just thought about that now.

  • I would think as long as you have the right things you'll be fine: plenty of warm clothes, a shadey area during the day and it just depends how baby handles heat period.  Our inlaws and family camped last weekend with a pop up camper and no ac, we learned very quickly that if we don't have a camper with AC then we can't camp.  DD is very warm blooded like we are and broke out in heat rash even though we were in the shade the entire time and there was a constant breeze. We just bought a fixer up'er camper yesterday so installing an AC is at the top of the list.
