baby shower gift question

So my friend's shower is coming up. She registered for all incredibly impractical things like 4 kinds of bottles and enough newborn clothes for octuplets. Nothing really useful like a bouncer or a crib or even a carseat. Is it weird if I go off the registry? I was thinking a big basket with stuff like diaper cream, gas drops, tylenol, little fingernail clippers, booger sucker ect. Stuff you wouldn't know you needed until you needed it.

Re: baby shower gift question

  • I think your idea is a good one. She probably doesn't know how useful those things are. I have my sisters shower this weekend, so I think I might steal this idea!

  • Is it possible she has already bought it? I didn't register for a crib, car seat, stroller, high chair, bouncer or swing, etc. because we bought it all ourselves.

Some of it she did.....But seriously 40 outfits size newborn and 4 kinds of bottles, plus 4 diaper bags does not a practical registry make. I didn't know what I needed when I had my first either....I wasn't judging, just trying to help

This. We either bought the bigger items or already had them gifted to us by family.

When I buy for a new baby I always buy a few things off the registry and throw in a couple of things I find most useful and arrange it in a nice laundry basket.

I have been giving new mom must have baskets with exactly the stuffy ou mentioned.  I usually get thank you text in the middle of night for having giving the stuff they needed but didn't know they needed.  I say go for it.

  • I would buy an outfit or something off the registry and mix it in with your basket of things. During my baby showers I loved when friends went off the registry and got me things that were useful or that came in handy for them.
  • I like your idea! This item was on the back of my mind and I did not register for it but my Aunt bought a kit with all those things for DS for my shower and I am glad she did!

I think they might sell a hygiene kit for babies at Walmart or other stores. They have the nail clipper, medicine dropper, nose thing (I don't know what it is called), etc.

  • I think in your case, I might do the dreaded gift card...maybe she has all of the little stuff too? I would love a basket like that, but if she already bought it...

  • IMO - gift cards are never dreaded :)  I loved gift cards with DS!  In fact, I actually still have a few!

  • I think your idea sounds great. My SIL got me something similar for my shower and it was honestly one of my favorites. There was cotton swabs, a little grooming kit, towels, powder, boogie sucker and a bunch of other super useful stuff. She also put it all in a really cool bucket/basket type thing that I still use in DS' room. We also got something similar at DH's diaper party but it was one of the prepackaged ones from Huggies. Such a geat practical gift.
