Pacifier

Does LO still use a pacifier?
Do you have rules on when it can be used?
Any plans on when to take it away?

DS still has his at 17 months. It just wasn't a battle I was ready to pick yet but I'm starting to get pretty sick of the darn things. He is VERY attached though so I'm not looking forward to the process of taking it away. I'm also trying to be conscious that we'll have another little one in 6 and a half months and I don't want him stealing his or her paci.

Re: Pacifier

  • We just got rid of the pacifier over this past weekend.  She used it for bedtime and naps only (it had been that way since 5ish months).  She hasn't used it for naps at daycare since she turned 1.

I tried to take it away a couple of months ago and that was an epic failure.  This time around, she cried for 45 minutes on Friday night, looking for it and hasn't made a peep about it since.  I'm still a little shocked it was so easy this time.

  • DS still has his, but only for naps/bedtime and the occasional long car ride. I'd like to get rid of it in the next couple of weeks if I can.

I used to only let DS have his for nap/bedtime. But now I also let him have it for car rides. Especially after picking him up from daycare. He's just so damn cranky lately being in his car seat that I have given in because his screaming in the car rattles me.

I definitely want him to be completely done with it by 2.

  • Josephine still has hers.  She gets it at naps and bedtime, long car rides, and if she's having a serious fit over something.

She doesn't have a stuffy or blankie that she is particularly attached to, so I don't want to take it away from her yet.  She has enough changes coming up with Parker coming in just 48 days, she just went to her big girl room (even if she is still in the crib) and I need sleep =)

We'll work on it slowly while I'm off.

Only in her crib or car seat. She's bumping up to the next daycare class in a week, and they don't allow them at all. That should help us ease away from them at naps. With DD1 I cut her off cold turkey at about 20 months (she also only used them in her crib). She cried for about 20 minutes for 2 nights and then that was it. I'll do the same for DD2 sometime in the next few months.

  • He only gets it for naps/rest times, bedtime, and sometimes on car rides.  Sometimes I think that I should get rid of it, but mostly, it isn't a battle I feel like fighting at this point.  If he used it all the time I would be more inclined to get rid of it.

  • C still has hers.  I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't really see a problem with it.  She usually only has them in her crib, but sometimes she'll use it in the car and around the house when I know her teeth are bothering her.  She sleeps with one in her mouth and one in each hand, so it's going to be difficult to take it away.  I'm not in a hurry.

  • Lo still has his and I'm in no hurry to take it away. Ideally, I'd love to have it gone, but he's super attached and will not sleep without it. I tried putting him to sleep without it a few times, but he will seriously scream and cry til he makes himself sick and as soon as I give it to him, he lays down and goes right to sleep. He never fights sleep if he has it from the beginning. He only uses it at bedtime and if he finds one during the day and plops it in his mouth, I simply tell him to get rid of that ole plug and he'll toss it down, no problem. I'm just not willing to give up easy bedtimes for the paci.
